Job Summary

The Hind Lab in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a postdoctoral associate to work on a project aimed at understanding how diverse inflammatory signals regulate the neutrophil response to inflammation using engineered in vitro platforms designed to mimic in vivo biology with human cells. Neutrophils are critical to protecting the body from foreign invaders during an immune response; however, defective neutrophil recruitment, excessive neutrophil infiltration, or improperly controlled neutrophil function contributes to chronic infections, tissue damage, and the progression of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, and fibrosis. The goal of this research project is to determine how secreted inflammatory signals and multicellular interactions regulate neutrophil behavior with the long-term goal of identifying targets to modulate neutrophil recruitment and function to treat infections and neutrophil-associated diseases. The researcher working on this project will have numerous opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate students and collaborate with other researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and within the medical school at University of Colorado Anschutz.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The Hind research group is broadly interested in using engineered devices to study the innate immune response to infection. The innate immune response is a complicated process that involves numerous cell types and occurs in many different tissues throughout the body. In order to better understand both the chemical and biophysical mechanisms that drive the human immune response, we must study cellular behavior in physiologically relevant contexts. Our group designs microfluidic models inspired by in vivo biology that recapitulate many of the important cell-cell interactions and structural components of the infectious microenvironment. We then use these models to study how multicellular interactions and the physical environment influence innate immune cell function during infection. This multidisciplinary research is carried out using principles and techniques from engineering, immunology, molecular biology, and microscopy.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The primary responsibility to conduct high quality research by developing questions and hypothesis related to the function of neutrophils in inflammation and testing them through careful experimentation. Specific tasks related to these duties include but are not limited to:
  • Isolating and culturing a variety of primary human immune cells from blood
  • Culturing various vascular cells including endothelial cells
  • Developing, fabricating, and using microfluidic models of the inflammatory microenvironment
  • Studying cellular function through cytokine panels and microscopy
  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
  • Disseminating results through publications and conference talks
  • Contributing data to and helping with proposal development
