ATTENTION:

The College of Letters and Sciences of Academic Affairs at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks an Academic Advisor.



JOB DETAILS:

This is a twelve-month position that reports to the Director of Advising in the College of Letters and Sciences (CoLS). This position provides direct advising to students and strategically supports faculty advisors in health-related pre-professional programs, computer science and cybersecurity majors, fully online programs, and other high-demand or high-need areas. This position will assist the Associate Dean and Director of Advising with recruitment and orientation events as well as retention and student success initiatives.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • At least two years experience in an education setting
  • Excellent written, verbal, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of best practices to promote student academic success and career exploration
  • Ability to learn, understand and explain complex processes and requirements
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism in communicating with faculty, staff, students, families/guests, and general public
Desired Qualifications:
  • Career development facilitator training and/or global career development facilitator certification; knowledge of career development theory and practices.
  • Education or experience in a STEM or health care field.
  • Experience as an academic advisor in a higher education setting


RESPONSIBILITIES:

75% A. Academic Advising and Student Success

1. Providing advising support to students who are considering careers in the health professions, such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, chiropractic, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assistant

2. Collaborate with faculty advisors across the college, with a focus on the Departments of Biology and Computer Science, to provide advising to students with CoLS majors.

3. Communicate with prospective pre-health/STEM students to offer advice and information on requirements and opportunities at UW-Whitewater.

4. Support students in the process of preparing for and applying to professional schools and provide guidance as they face the realities of competitive professional program admission processes

5. Utilize Navigate and other campus technologies to maintain records and collaborate with other campus units to support student success.

6. Advise new students at Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) events.

7. Collaborate with campus partners to ensure holistic student advising and support.

8. Assist Director of Advising in supporting transfer students.

9. Assist Director of Advising and online program coordinators in supporting students in fully online degree programs.

25% B. Administrative Duties

1. Participate in preview days, admitted student days, and recruitment events.

2. Develop and strengthen relationships with regional professional schools.

3. Assist in maintaining and updating pre-professional certificate curriculum.

4. Facilitate transfer credit challenge process for courses in CoLS.

5. Collaborate with the First Year Experience Office to maintain online orientation modules.

6. Manage CoLS Jumpstart programming.

7. Maintain and update four-year plans, CoLS advising website, program lists, and CoLS Advising Office publications in collaboration with Advising Administrative Assistant.

8. Other duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $45,000 – $48,000.
