The Inspector, Fire/Safety Level I position is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of the University’s fire and life safety equipment in University owned buildings as required by applicable local regulations, New York State fire and building codes, and National Fire Protection Association. The position is responsible to perform and meet recommendations from the University’s Property Insurance Carrier, FM Global. The Inspector, Fire/Safety Level I position responds and performs critical functions at emergency incidents such as fires, fire alarms, auto accidents, hazardous spills, injuries, and property damage calls. The position is responsible for enforcement related to the life safety annual inspection of campus buildings by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control to ensure that life safety violations identified are abated in a timely manner. The position is also responsible to assist with the occupational safety of University employees by providing training and enforcement related to specific OSHA standards such as fall protection, confined space, forklift safety, ergonomics, and lock out/tag out electrical safety. The Inspector, Fire/Safety Level I position is a trainee position and requires continued supervision and mentoring. Qualifications
  • An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) + years of experience with fire and life safety systems preferred.
  • Certified New York State Code Enforcement Officer.
  • Experience working with university based populations preferred.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Knowledge of applicable state, local, and federal building and fire codes.
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations.
  • Experience with Fire and Life Safety systems, as well as fire and life safety inspection and hazards.
  • Completion of training courses in fire prevention, NYS Building Codes and Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and decision making skills and be able to work independently or as a team member.
  • Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office application suite.
Responsibilities
  • Responds to emergency incidents to perform critical functions such as lifesaving tasks and property conservation and limit environmental impacts, and act as a liaison with the Syracuse Fire Department.
  • Becomes knowledgeable about campus buildings and all life safety systems.
  • Inspects, tests, and facilitates maintenance of University life safety fire protection and suppression systems to ensure compliance with local, state, federal, and the University’s property insurance carrier’s rules and recommendations.
  • Conducts building inspections to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes. Responsible for approximately 724,000 square feet of building space.
  • Performs OSHA related training to University employees and safety inspections of work areas to ensure the occupational safety of University employees.
  • Responsible to staff University special events for life safety and liability issues such as making sure fire exits are unobstructed, occupant capacity is within regulation and trip/fall hazards are eliminated.
