Assistant Professor of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies

Job No: 497176
Position Type: full-time
Location: Lewisburg, PA
Categories: Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies

The Department of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Bucknell University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2023.

We seek a teacher-scholar with a Ph.D. in Classics, Ancient History, Near Eastern Languages & Culture, or related fields. (Candidates in the final stages of completing degree requirements for a Ph.D. will be considered.) We seek a scholar with specialties in the archaeology and material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world, broadly defined but with the chronological parameters of c. 450 BCE - 700 CE. We seek candidates who focus on the human relationship to the environment, possibly including a specialty on ancient resources, technology, development, trade, or engineering. Candidates also must have the ability to teach ancient Greek or Latin up to the intermediate level. Candidates will demonstrate professional-level proficiency in research regarding the ancient world, emerging evidence of a strong body of scholarship, potential for growth in their field of specialization, and excellence in undergraduate teaching to a diverse student body. Candidates should expect to teach a range of courses that focus on history, art and archaeology, religion and mythology, and other aspects of ancient culture in the ancient Mediterranean. The normal teaching load for a tenure-track colleague is five courses per academic year.

We seek a teacher-scholar who can demonstrate a commitment to diversity and high impact educational practices (writing intensive courses, interdisciplinary courses, global learning, etc.) that would appeal to a broad university audience. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education. We invite candidates to explain how issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion are brought into their teaching, scholarship, and/or service in their application materials.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, a CV, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement of scholarly program, and a statement describing any experience, training, or engagement with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applicants should arrange to have three letters of recommendation submitted separately.

For additional information and to apply, please go to Bucknell's career site (careers.bucknell.edu). Applications will only be accepted online. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. Candidates who advance past the initial review of dossiers will be interviewed by video conferencing.

For any questions, please contact Kris Trego (kmt012@bucknell.edu), Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies.
