Job Description Summary
A Research Specialist / Laboratory Manager is sought for a biomedical research lab in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Research in the lab is on human papillomavirus-host interactions and cancer, and the successful applicant will be actively involved in designing and conducting research in the lab and in managing laboratory operations.
Job Description
The Research Specialist C plans and conducts complex experiments to meet research project objectives. Performs laboratory experiments and clinical studies for product or material formulation and development. Oversee overall management of laboratory tool, documentations and processes to ensure regulatory compliance and timely completion of project/program deliverables. Closely collaborates with content experts to select assessment instruments. adapt existing instruments and develop new instruments and with Principal Investigator (PI) on experimental/clinical work set ups in accordance to established protocols. Responsible for team performance management and reviews.
The Research Specialist D will be responsible for independently designing, performing, and analyzing laboratory projects in the area of human papillomavirus-host interactions and cancer. S/he will be a critical member of a team completing experiments addressing the aims of federally funded grants and developing new projects. Proficiency in cellular and molecular techniques such as cell culture, Western blotting, qRT-PCR, cloning, viral transduction, and microscopy is required. The candidate must also exhibit excellent organizational, interpersonal, data management, and presentation skills. The incumbent should be able to work independently and design, troubleshoot and complete experiments in a timely manner. S/he should be proficient in using computer software including and not limited to Excel, Word, and databases. Evidence of the required qualifications will be reflected by a strong record of peer-reviewed publications in a relevant area of biomedical science. The ability to work independently and with others is necessary, and the successful candidate will actively manage day to day lab operations and assist the PI in training laboratory members and preparing data for grants and publications.
With guidance from PI, conduct molecular and cellular biology wet lab experiments.
Interpret data and use results to design new experiments.
General laboratory management: ordering, record keeping, organization and inventory maintenance.
Data management, figure preparation, writing.
Training and orientation of new and existing laboratory members.
Support PI with additional laboratory and administrative tasks as needed.
Attendance and presentation at laboratory and other on- and off-campus meetings.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Position is contingent on continued funding.
Qualifications:
Research Specialist C; Bachelor's Degree with 3-5 years of related experience in research, clinical study, project and people management or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Research Specialist D; Master's degree and 3-5 years of experience in academic molecular biology research or equivalent combination of experience and education. PhD in cancer biology, virology, or a related field strongly preferred. A broad knowledge base of cell and molecular biological techniques is required. Demonstrated abilities to multi-task and exhibiting effective time management skills are required. Prior laboratory experience including mammalian tissue culture is required.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
