SUMMARY:

The Director of Development will plan, manage and coordinate all philanthropic fundraising in support of the research, teaching and patient care mission of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences which on average raises $12 Million annually. These programs and activities will be congruent with the programmatic and fundraising goals of Johns Hopkins Medicine and The Johns Hopkins University.

Primary Duties:

  • Works directly with the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and FJHM leadership to establish priorities for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences development program.
  • Identifies, qualifies, solicits and stewards major and principal gift prospects who have the potential to make a $100,000+ commitment to the department.
  • Develops a strong working knowledge of the research, clinical and operational priorities in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Plans, implements and manages a major gift fundraising program to meet priorities by:
    1. Working closely with the Chairman and faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to establish annual fundraising goals based upon an assessment of the qualified donor portfolio and the priorities of the Department.
    2. Identifying and evaluating giving potential of prospects; developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
    3. Developing, in consultation with the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and FJHM leadership, an annual work plan; a schedule of fundraising goals and proposals to be presented; and planned visits in accordance with institutional standards.
    4. Scheduling and arranging cultivation and stewardship visits with major and principal gift donors and prospects; cultivation/recognition events such as research presentations; chair and laboratory dedications and meetings in coordination with the participation of faculty, university leaders, trustees and volunteers.
    5. Communicating with major and principal gift prospects and donors, advising them on specific devices for giving-both current and deferred-to maximize gift and tax benefits.
    6. Preparing proposals, solicitation letters, and cultivation and stewardship materials for major and principal gift prospects and donors.
    7. Motivating and guiding faculty in identifying major and principal gift prospects and participating in solicitations.
    8. Managing the development component of the Advisory Board.
    9. Participating in appropriate administrative and faculty meetings within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and The Johns Hopkins University.
  • Coordinates fundraising activities and prospect management with institutional development staff.
  • Manages the development team which includes two senior associate directors of development, an associate director of development and a senior development coordinator.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years related professional experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Superb major gift ability with a solid track record of securing six and seven-figure gifts. Experience identifying and securing planned gifts preferred.
  • Ability to work within a complex, multi-divisional and multi-departmental environment to establish priorities, set objectives and achieve stated goals.
  • Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds and to demonstrate an honest respect for each individual.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to articulate and translate eloquently, the complex goals, mission and aspirations of the program for all audiences.
  • Willingness to travel.
