Overview
The Eviction Lab, a leading housing research center at Princeton University, is searching for a communications specialist to ensure that our work reaches wide audiences, either directly through our website, social media accounts, and newsletter, or through the work of reporters across the country. The Communications Specialist will work closely with the Lab's researchers, the audience and community engagement editor, and the administration team. The position is remote/hybrid and applicants with a media background and interest in housing are strongly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Media Engagement:
- Respond to media requests in collaboration with other members of the Media Team
- Engage with reporters
- Create and prepare plans for any specific events or moments of high media demand
- Think creatively about how to share our content with reporters and audiences
- Manage the Lab's social media accounts in collaboration with other members of the Media Team
- Write, edit, and publish a monthly newsletter highlighting the Lab's publications, activities, and media appearances
- Edit researchers' blog posts related to the Lab's research
- Work with the Media Team organizing events for journalism students and reporters interested in learning how to cover housing issues
- Collaborate with housing, legal, and advocacy organizations to promote the Eviction Lab's work and conversations sourrounding housing issues
- Work in particular with underserved communities, including Black, Latinx, and immigrant communities, to inform them about housing issues
- Write and edit text needed for several projects, including our websites, research papers, and other documents
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least 3 years of work experience is required, as are the following:
- Writing or journalism experience (personally or professionally -- the Lab recognizes both paid and unpaid work experiences) and a desire to develop further as a writer
- Knowledge and experience with housing issues, housing policy, homelessness, public housing, or other related topics
- A passion for anti-racist community engagement (either personally or professionally -- the Lab welcomes a variety of life experiences)
- Experience managing social media accounts
- The candidate must be proactive, creating solutions to communication challenges
- A desire to work with diverse groups of people
- Ability to work collaboratively on practically all aspects of the job and willingness to ask for advice or assistance
- Fluency in Spanish, Tagalog, Mandarin, Korean, or other commonly spoken languages in the United States
- Knowledge of research methods or statistics in a plus
- Experience communicating scientific findings to general audiences is particularly valued
- Experience with live television or radio interviews -- as the subject or interviewer -- is a plus
