Overview

Princeton University is seeking a talented Network Monitoring Engineer to join its central Office of Information Technology (OIT) organization. The Network Monitoring Engineer provides advanced technical expertise and platform management in delivering advanced network monitoring services to the University community. This position ensures the availability, integrity, security and reliability of critical monitoring systems. This position is primarily involved with implementing and managing network and system monitoring management. As a member of the Enterprise Monitoring Services group, the monitoring engineer is responsible for managing monitoring infrastructure, analyzing, and developing solutions to advanced monitoring requirements, and consolidating monitoring services to a single observability platform.



Responsibilities

Leadership -

  • Participate and when appropriate lead in the analysis, design, installation and management of monitoring and observability services (alerting, integration with Service Now Event Management, etc.) and systems; through the full lifecycle of development, quality assurance, user acceptance testing and production; this includes the configuration, tuning, monitoring, storage planning and integration of monitoring environments.
  • Research industry trends to provide recommendations in planning for future expansion and improvements to monitoring and observability services.
Technical Support -

  • Primary responsibility for the administration and support of enterprise monitoring systems, including SIEM and remote access management, network eDiscovery and monitoring tools, and a future observability platform
  • Provide programming and scripting support for automating and improving various aspects of enterprise network monitoring services.
  • Provide primary operational support for all monitoring services to OIT and the University community on a routine schedule.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting assistance, and routinely collaborate, with University departments and OIT teams on operational issues, projects, and initiatives.
  • Provide on-call support on a routine schedule to perform upgrades, execute maintenance changes, and resolve emergency issues outside normal business hours.
Monitoring and Configuration -

  • Monitor and manage monitoring configuration and operation of network core devices, campus wireless infrastructure, network services, tools and systems, connectivity to service providers and downstream customers.
  • Monitor, analyze and verify scalability, performance, high availability, and data integrity for monitoring services.
  • Establish and maintain standards, policies, documentation, and logs for network and other enterprise monitoring systems
  • Investigate and respond to any complaints regarding abuses involving networking systems.
  • Work with others in OIT to design and implement redundant and survivable monitoring systems in accordance with disaster recovery and emergency planning teams.
  • Regularly monitor vendor and security organization bulletins for security vulnerabilities and bug fixes.
  • Routinely apply critical bug fixes, security updates, or required configuration changes.
  • Establish automated processes to monitor applications and minimize failures or degraded performance, and alert administrators to problems.
  • Routinely review and test backup and restore procedures for network and other monitoring systems.
  • Regularly review monitoring logs and trends for the network infrastructure and work with colleagues and service owners to help address any issues identified.
  • When provided access to personal, proprietary and/or otherwise confidential data, maintains such data in the strictest confidence and follows procedures to ensure the privacy, security and proper use of data.
Professional Development -

  • Participate in professional development and training courses to continuously develop enterprise monitoring skills and knowledge.


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience managing or supporting medium to large enterprise monitoring infrastructure, with at least 5 years of experience working for an IT organization.
  • Demonstrated innovative thinker and creative problem solver.
  • Knowledge and experience in infrastructure monitoring design and operations.
  • Demonstrated skill in solving complex problems in the infrastructure environment particularly in the areas of IP-based wired and wireless communications
  • Strong understanding of network protocols including TCP/IP
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to multiple operating systems and platforms
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in a highly collaborative environment
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, to respond to shifting priorities, and to work well under the pressure of critical problems and deadlines
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours and be on call to perform monitoring maintenance and support unexpected critical issues and major incidents
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment, with general supervision.
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with network security systems such as VPN systems, SIEM, and Intrusion Prevention Systems
  • Ability to write programs in at least one scripting or programming language such as Python
