Purpose of Position:

The Department of Psychology at Christopher Newport University invites applications for one Lecturer position in Applied Psychology, effective August 2023. This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment with a nominal teaching load of 4-4. The Department is interested in candidates in any of the Applied areas of Clinical, Counseling, Community, Educational, Environmental, Health, Human Factors, Industrial and Organizational, School, and Applied Developmental. The Department is also interested in areas that intersect with topics related to diversity and equal opportunity. Applicants must be committed to a teacher-scholar model, demonstrate the potential for outstanding teaching with a diverse student body, and have a commitment to mentoring undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities would include teaching one of our core courses in introductory psychology, statistics, or research methods and courses in the candidates’ areas of expertise.

A doctoral degree in Psychology or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Lecturer. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank, and ABD candidates who will not hold the doctorate by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.

 

Departmental Information:

The Department of Psychology at Christopher Newport University includes 20 members who are dedicated teacher/scholars and actively engaged in mentoring students while working in a collegial atmosphere. The successful applicant will join a team of faculty that integrates high quality teaching and significant research involving undergraduates. The Psychology Department has about 575 majors (approximately 11% of all majors at CNU). The Department is housed in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences in the 21st century Mary Brock Forbes integrated science center with state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces. The department supports and works collaboratively with the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program and the Master of Arts in Teaching program. In 2020, College Factual ranked the CNU Psychology Department as a Best Psychology Program (#56 out of 835; top 6.7%) nationwide.
