Instructor: School of Music / Institute for Southern Studies

The University of South Carolina School of Music and The Institute for Southern Studies is accepting applications for a 9-month, Professional Track Instructor. This non-tenure-track position will start August 16, 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach at the undergraduate level in a joint appointment in Music and Southern Studies, with a teaching load of 3-3. Music courses include topics and themes related to music in the South, Native American music in the South, music of the global south, and folk and/or popular musics of the South, with a possible graduate level course.  Graduate committee service may be required. Southern Studies courses include undergraduate courses on southern music and topical courses such as The Contemporary South, the 20^th Century South, and The Global South, with opportunities to teach an upper-level special topics course. Some administrative duties for the Institute will be required. This is a 9-month appointment, renewable based on Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have completed an MA or PhD, in their respective discipline, and have a minimum of two years’ teaching experience, or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD. The preferred candidate will have an understanding of the history, music, and culture of the American South and a record of excellence in the classroom.
