The University of South Carolina School of Music and The Institute for Southern Studies is accepting applications for a 9-month, Professional Track Instructor. This non-tenure-track position will start August 16, 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach at the undergraduate level in a joint appointment in Music and Southern Studies, with a teaching load of 3-3. Music courses include topics and themes related to music in the South, Native American music in the South, music of the global south, and folk and/or popular musics of the South, with a possible graduate level course.  Graduate committee service may be required. Southern Studies courses include undergraduate courses on southern music and topical courses such as The Contemporary South, the 20th Century South, and The Global South, with opportunities to teach an upper-level special topics course. Some administrative duties for the Institute will be required. This is a 9-month appointment, renewable based on Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have completed an MA or PhD, in their respective discipline, and have a minimum of two years’ teaching experience, or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD. The preferred candidate will have an understanding of the history, music, and culture of the American South and a record of excellence in the classroom.

It brings together outstanding faculty, specializing in the study of the South, from a wide variety of disciplines for research, teaching, special seminars, and public programs.
