SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Strategic Initiatives for Military Affairs works collaboratively with the Director of Schreiner Institute to ensure students of the Schreiner Institute, students enrolled in ROTC, Military Academy Preparatory School (MAPS), and Veteran and Active Duty students (VAD) of Schreiner University are provided the best educational opportunities and resources necessary to make them successful for the future. In 1923, Schreiner University began as a military institute for young men (and later young women) in order to offer “facilities for high grade instruction and military training for boys and young men as preparation for college and university work.” The Director is responsible for developing and implementation of a comprehensive strategy in coordination with the Provost and the Director of Schreiner Institute to plan and execute the near-term implementation steps and creating the vision and implementation of the mid and long-term strategy for the Institute. Additionally, the Director is responsible for organizational coordination across the campus to improve efficiencies and for mission focus to assure unity of effort. He or she is also responsible for facilitating institutional strategic planning, providing liaison with Schreiner University, local, state, and federal relations and strategic initiatives point of contact while advancing a military-embracing environment throughout the local community and Schreiner University and Schreiner Institute. The person in this leadership position will work with multiple agencies and programs and will draw upon an extensive knowledge of available resources available to veteran benefits and how those benefits best apply within the context of higher education.

The Director is additionally responsible for recruiting prospective students, veterans or active-duty members of the United States Armed Forces to Schreiner Institute.

The Director will have a solid understanding of current federal and state legislation pertaining to the benefits offered to military service veterans and their dependents.

The duties of this position include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Planning and developing comprehensive strategic planning and detailed implementation planning documents for the revitalization of Schreiner Institute;
  • Advising VAD students and their dependents of the opportunities offered through various military service benefits;
  • Collaborating with a variety of campus offices to ensure the university supports and are responsive to the needs VAD students and their families in order to actualize in deed and practice Schreiner’s commitment to promoting a VAD friendly campus environment;
  • Partnering with outside agencies, boards, and organizations (e.g., Veteran Services Offices, Wounded Warrior Project, military-friendly non-profits, local businesses, high school JROTC programs, etc.) in support of SIMA and VAD students;
  • Representing Schreiner University and SIMA before state, regional, and national organizations, and—as appropriate or necessary—through public relations opportunities offered by media outlets;
  • Providing direct leadership and oversight of the development and evaluation of campus-related VAD student initiatives (e.g., learning communities, on-campus VAD programming and related events, VAD-tailored recreation and wellness programming that ensures compliance with policies and procedures of the U.S. Department of Veterans Administration);
  • Developing and implementing recruitment strategies targeting prospective students to include active military personnel, and veterans;
  • Preparing reports and presents information to campus administration, external organizations, current donors, prospective donors, and other key external stakeholders as requested;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Able to develop strategic plans and detailed implementation of those plans
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with students, faculty, and staff as well as with external constituents.
  • Military officer experience (honorable discharge required) in one of the branches of the United States Armed Forces.
  • Understanding of current state and federal student benefits.
  • Able to work well individually and in groups.
  • Able to work professionally and collaboratively with others.
  • Proactive, able to begin projects with little supervision.
  • Able to meet deadlines.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license, related insurance and good driving record.
  • Service Academy graduate strongly preferred
  • Previous experience in academic environments preferred
  • Previous training/education experience preferred
  • Previous fundraising experience preferred
