The Director is responsible for the overall supervision of administrative staff, office personnel, housing facilities and operations in partnership with facilities management, and the programmatic model. The Director is ultimately responsible for the hiring and training of all staff. The Director monitors and assures that the training and evaluation systems of personnel in place are appropriate and that personnel engage in training and evaluation functions receive assistance and feedback.
 

a. To provide direct supervision, guidance and support to the Associate Director of Residence Life, Associate Director of Housing, Housing/Assignment Coordinator, and the Administrative Support Associate.
 

b. To promote a sense of team and to provide overall leadership to the staff of the department.
 

c. Ensure a stellar RA recruitment, selection, training, and ongoing development process resulting in a dedicated group of student leaders committed to UNCP and to student engagement, success, and retention.
 

d. Ensure a strong partnership exists with both finance (budget, debt service, planning, and projections) and facilities (clean, well maintained, safe, secure, and pleasant community spaces).
 

Administration
Provide overall leadership and strategic planning for the management and administration of the Housing and Residence Life program.
 

a. Actively assess departmental needs and priorities and respond accordingly through quality services, programs and procedures.
 

b. Foster and facilitate long-range planning as it relates to the department’s overall program and operation including annual updates of a five year facilities R&R plan in collaboration with finance and facilities.
 

c. Provide overall leadership and direction for the departmental policy and procedural development and implementation that directly or indirectly impacts Housing and Residence Life.
 

d. Establish appropriate timelines for the housing assignment dates, room change dates, consolidation dates, and deadlines.
 

e. Complete additional projects as assigned by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
 

Financial Management
Provide direction and accountability for departmental budgets and the allocation and utilization of those monies.
 

a. Work in collaboration with departmental and divisional personnel in the development of the annual department budget.
 

b. Work in collaboration with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration in the development of annual housing rates.
 

c. Monitor the revenue generated by housing agreements, summer conferences, and other enterprises.
 

d. Monitor and approve the expenditure of funds from the department.
 

Construction and Renovation
Provide continuous assessment and planning for renovation needs, as well as construction of new residential facilities through strong partnership with finance and facilities.
 

a. Actively work with Planning and Construction personnel and other designated architects during the stages of design development and construction of new residential facilities.
 

b. Work with Facilities Operation personnel to assess and plan for the proper mechanical and structural maintenance of residential facilities, as well as on-going cosmetic repairs and improvements.
 

Other
a. Serves on appropriate University, divisional or departmental committees, task forces, or search committees.
 

b. Serve in a liaison relationship to members of the University faculty, staff, parents, the general public and other departments on campus.
 

c. Will serve in on call rotation and may provide emergency response and confidential referrals to a wide range of services including services which assist with psychological, academic, medical, and legal needs.

This position is Mandatory Personnel: Mandatory Employees: Employees whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:  

Earned Master’s degree required with three years professional experience in housing and residence life.


Knowledge of student development theory, application, and current trends. Familiarity and/or engagement with housing professional organizations at an international, regional, and/or state level.

Must have excellent supervisory, budgeting and fiscal management, communication, writing, planning, problem-solving, technology, leadership, team building, partnership building, and organizational skills. Ability to seek innovative solutions to problems is expected. Must be student-oriented and have a commitment to working in a team-based, collaborative environment along with the ability to work with a culturally diverse student population.

Management Preferences:  Preference for those with additional years of experience and demonstrating progressive leadership and responsibility in the field.
