Centre College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics beginning in August 2023. We seek a teacher-scholar with a strong commitment to student-centered, inclusive teaching who will enhance the teaching and learning environment at Centre College with their lived experiences, ideas, perspectives, and scholarship. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in any area of mathematics or statistics by the start of their appointment.

While the area of expertise is open, teaching expectations will include introductory courses, such as our modern calculus sequence, Introduction to Statistics, and Mathematics in our Society, along with courses related to their specialty among upper-level offerings. In addition, there will be opportunities to contribute to the college’s innovative general education curriculum. Collaborative research with undergraduates is strongly encouraged and supported by the college.

Established in 1819, Centre College is a nationally ranked Liberal Arts College and is proud to host one of the nation’s premiere study-abroad programs, to which the successful candidate may contribute. With 1,400 students and an exceptional faculty of teacher-scholars, classes are small and academic standards are high, and Centre graduates enjoy extraordinary success in top graduate and professional schools, prestigious fellowships, and rewarding careers. A new strategic plan places additional emphasis on community engagement, experiential learning, career readiness, and holistic wellness.

Centre is committed to an environment that welcomes and supports diversity. As noted in the Statement of Community, Centre strives to create an environment where differences are celebrated, governance is shared, ideas are freely and respectfully exchanged, and all members of the community benefit from the richness of diverse backgrounds and experiences. Therefore, the Mathematics program strongly encourages applications from candidates who further diversify our faculty, who celebrate the rich diversity of our student body, and who utilize inclusive and engaging pedagogical practices.

The mathematics program at Centre consists of nine full-time faculty members and graduates a strong class of approximately 20 math majors each year.  We pride ourselves on our effective teaching, collegial relationships with each other, and our supportive relationships with students. Several additional resources support faculty success, including a robust Center for Teaching and Learning, peer mentoring, membership in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, and endowed funding for professional development.
