Dean, Division of Physical & Biological Sciences

The University of California, Santa Cruz seeks a dynamic, visionary, and collaborative leader and accomplished scholar to serve as the next Dean of the Division of Physical & Biological Sciences.

As a preeminent research and minority-serving university leading at the intersection of innovation and social justice, UC Santa Cruz transforms California and the world through our groundbreaking research discoveries, creative and public service activities, and by providing an inclusive student-centered learning experience that develops critical thinking, creativity and compassion to empower students as engaged citizens and leaders.

The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences offers 21 undergraduate degree programs, 10 masters programs and 11 Ph.D. programs across nine academic departments. The Division is home to 10 research units, including three organized research units (ORUs) that are located on the campus: the Institute for Marine Sciences and the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics, which are affiliated with the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences, and the Genomics Institute, which is affiliated with the Baskin School of Engineering, with members from the Division. UC Santa Cruz is the headquarters campus for the University of California Observatories, which manages Lick Observatory. In addition, the science division manages the UC Santa Cruz campus reserve and four sites, encompassing 5000 acres, within the UC Natural Reserve System, living laboratories that serve as research and study sites.

The dean is the chief academic and executive officer of the Division of Physical & Biological Sciences. The dean reports directly to the Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC), has nine direct reports, and oversees around 180 full-time Senate faculty and over 200 administrative, instructional and support staff. The dean is responsible for the management of the Division’s annual budget of approximately $47 million.

The dean will engage in the following opportunities and challenges: foster strong communication and collaboration among division community members, leverage relationships with associated units, champion diversity equity and inclusion initiatives, generate external resources and support philanthropy, recruit and retain exceptional faculty, and support talented staff.

The successful candidate will have an accomplished record of scholarship that merits a tenured appointment at UC Santa Cruz at the rank of full professor.

To be considered as candidates, applicants must have an earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree at the time of application, submit a CV, with a detailed letter of interest and a statement of contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion, to the search consultants below.
