Every undergraduate student at Yale is assigned to one of fourteen distinctive and vibrant living communities called residential colleges. Every college houses a Head and a Dean who share responsibility for the operation of the college. Residential College Deans counsel students on a wide range of academic matters, including course selection and progress towards their degree; respond to faculty and families; and manage student emergencies. College Deans administer and participate in residential college functions, including housing and extracurricular activities; serve on Yale College committees; and teach one or two courses per year. College deans live in a residential college apartment and have a meal plan to encourage both formal and informal interactions with students, faculty and staff. First-year deans attend “dean school”, training for student first-year counselors and all orientation activities. The dean must have an advanced degree and be qualified to teach courses in Yale College. The Residential College Dean is appointed for a three-year term which may be renewed given a favorable review at the end of the second year.

As needed, refers students to resources, offices, or persons that can be of assistance to them; serves in a continuing collaborating role with these sources of support and counseling. 7. As a supervisor of first-year advisers, works closely with the College Fellows and Faculty Advisers to advise the first-year students of the college. 8. Writes letters of recommendation for fellowship or postgraduate work or study; serves as custodian of students’ placement file in the college Dean's office. 9. Cooperates whenever necessary in the enforcement and application of the Undergraduate Regulations that govern the conduct of students. 10. Teaches one or two courses a year in Yale College. 11.
