Associate Director of Media Relations

Salary: $80,000-$90,000

Job Description Summary:

Under the general direction of the Senior Director of News and Communications, and supporting the Vice President/Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the Associate Director of Media Relations leads communication efforts for reputation management and crisis communications, as well as outreach to news media.

Position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship. Position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, currently set at 40% work from home. This position has been approved for remote work (3 days on campus, 2 days remote).

Remote work is work that can be done alone or via technology from a remote work site. Remote work is not a right, it is a working arrangement that can be modified or revoked by Miami University at any time for any reason, including convenience of the University.

The associate director leads the development, planning and implementation of crisis communication protocol, in both matters of emergency and reputational threats and opportunities. The associate director will serve as a university spokesperson when needed.

Alongside the director of content strategy and associate director of university news, the associate director also leads public relations planning for major university initiatives and presidential priorities. An integral part of the storytelling team, the associate director also will write and pitch stories to news media that actively promote and elevate Miami University’s reputation and brand.

 

Duties/Physical Demands:

Review, refine and continually update university’s crisis communication plan and collaborate with colleagues across the university to proactively ensure crisis/issues management preparedness and awareness, as well as alignment in response.

Work with the Senior Director of News and Communications to respond strategically to institutional media inquiries with appropriate statements and information.

Build relationships with the local and national news media and pitch stories that support Miami’s brand platform.

Research requested information and develop responses in coordination with campus units and subject matter experts

Support the Senior Director of News and Communications to serve as the university’s public information officer in crisis situations by developing media relations strategies for issues management and crisis communication with an eye toward authentic messaging that best reflects the university’s brand.

Participate in disaster drills, active shooter scenario training and other crisis communications exercises.

Monitor news media coverage of crisis situations and provide regular written briefings and news clips to be shared with university leadership.

Provide expert advice on issues management to senior leadership and play a key role in crisis communications

Serve on university committees and teams such as the Institutional Response Team, Crisis Response Team, and others

Conduct best practice research on crisis communication and issue management and provide recommendations for university leadership on tactics in comprehensive strategic crisis response plans.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field.

At least 5 years of progressively responsible integrated marketing communications, public relations, and/or crisis communications experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 7 years of experience in integrated marketing communications, public relations, and crisis communication.

Completed federal (i.e., FEMA) and/or local government crisis communication training courses.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Experience implementing crisis communication protocol.

Demonstrated experience serving as a spokesperson for an organization and working with the news media.

Experience developing communications campaigns.

Experience working in highly collaborative environments requiring interpersonal communication competence, initiative, active listening, and emotional intelligence.
