The Department of Urban Education at Rutgers University-Newark is seeking an Assistant Professor of Bilingual Education to begin September 1, 2023. The Department of Urban Education is committed to equity that is grounded in valuing a racially, socioeconomically, and linguistically diverse society, and we are looking for a like-minded, justice-oriented faculty member. Our bilingual education and ESL programs are new and dynamic offerings within our department. We are seeking a faculty member to continue to grow the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate-level programs in bilingual education. Specifically, highly qualified applicants would have expertise in bilingual education and teaching English as a second language with research emphasis in urban education foundations, social justice, and advocacy. Applicants should be committed to collaborating with faculty, departments across disciplines, and community partners to understand and improve the educational experiences of bi/multilingual students and English learners within urban sectors of the United States.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate: Teach courses in Bilingual Education and ESL including social justice, sociopolitical policies, and advocacy, as well as other courses as assigned by the department. Continue to develop a strong Bilingual Education and ESL program. Collaborate and cooperate with colleagues to fulfill the needs of the departments and colleges strategic goals. Establish and maintain a rigorous research agenda. Actively participate in service for the department, school, and university committees. Service duties include program-building, as well as a commitment to extra-curricular activities. Seek extramural funding. Develop and foster partnerships with school districts, other colleges, and universities for engaged scholarship. Participate in local, state, national, and international education organizations.

Education and Experience

Doctorate in Bilingual Education or a closely related field. Commitment to high standards in teaching and assessment. K-12 experience teaching in dual-language/bilingual and/or ESL classrooms.
Commitment to collaborating with program faculty to meet program needs. Ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the department, school, and university.
