The Department of Health Science kindly invites applicants for an Assistant Professor, term-renewable (non-tenure track) appointment in Health Science to begin August 2023. The new faculty member will join a nascent department in the May School of Arts & Sciences of two full-time faculty members with unique disciplinary expertise and a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty and students. The new faculty member will serve the health science undergraduate major, one of the largest at Stonehill College. The major primarily serves students interested in careers as allied healthcare professionals such as, but not limited to, public health scientists, physician assistants, nurses, and physical therapists. We seek enthusiastic applicants who are also committed to excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduates, and who will foster diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice in education and science.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Primary teaching responsibilities include Exercise Physiology (lecture and lab), Biomechanics (lecture and lab), and an upper-level specialty course(s) in the candidate’s area of expertise. Additionally, the ability to teach Human Anatomy & Physiology and/or Nutrition is preferred. The new faculty member will have a four-course load in each fall and spring semester. Lab courses at Stonehill count as full courses. Additionally, the position requires academic advising for Health Science students and service to the department and the college, for example, engagement at events for prospective students and their families, and rotating committee work.

Education & Experience

Successful candidates will have a doctorate in: Exercise Science, Physiology, Kinesiology, or Biomechanics, or a combination of doctoral level education and experience that qualifies them to teach the required courses and advise Health Science students. Previous experience mentoring undergraduate students is strongly preferred (i.e., research mentor, teaching assistant, etc.). Previous undergraduate teaching experience is strongly preferred but is not mandatory. In the case of previous teaching and/or mentoring experience, candidates should explain his/her/their approach to ensuring equitable instruction and how she/he/they create a sense of belonging in the classroom and laboratory for marginalized individuals or groups. For candidates without previous undergraduate teaching and/or mentoring experience, candidates should explain how they/he/she will uphold the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice within course instruction, advising, and as a member of the institution at large. There is a strong student interest in physical therapy and exercise science careers at Stonehill College. The Health Science Department seeks a dedicated educator and mentor to foster this interest. To this end, we welcome proposals for an upper-level specialty course potentially to be offered in the Department by the candidate. The in-development, short course description can be added as an addendum to the one-page teaching philosophy document (see Special Instructions to Applicants).

Applications are accepted through the Stonehill Jobs website only. Interested applicants should submit online: 1) a letter of application, 2) a one-page teaching philosophy, and 3) a curriculum vitae. At least two recommendation letters are required, and applicants can submit up to three letters. No preference is given to candidates who submit more than the two required letters. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. For questions, please email Dr. Katharine Harris at kharris1@stonehill.edu.
