ATTENTION:

The Theatre/Dance department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater announces a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor position in Lighting Design beginning August 2023.

The department is especially interested in the application of lighting design educators and professionals whose work reflects experience with productions that are culturally diverse. We hope these individuals will have expanded ideas regarding who is served by a production, both as an audience member and as a participant. Successful candidates will have a secondary design or specialty.



JOB DETAILS:

This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure track position, with a 4/4 teaching load in a fully undergraduate department. Two to five lighting departmental lighting designs ( from three plays, one musical/opera, one dance concert) each academic year are included as part of the teaching load; this number varies depending upon the number of student design assignments in a given year, in which case this position serves as mentor for those student lighting design practicums. Experience/knowledge in lighting dance performance is beneficial.

In coordination with the department technical director/production manager, this position will supervise electrics crews and lighting/projection technology use for the department, mentoring lighting technology practicums and working with students to maintain equipment and inventory, as well as maintaining a safe learning and working environment.

Experience with ETC consoles and data networking is preferred. Proficiency in Vectorworks and Lightwright is expected.



QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in entertainment/theatrical design, preferably lighting design. If the candidate’s terminal degree is in entertainment/theatrical design but not in lighting design, commensurate professional and previous university academic experience will be considered.
• Evidence of successful university level teaching with focus on lighting design; a minimum of three years teaching at the university level is preferred.
• Evidence of professional production experience in lighting design with active practice and reputation in the field.
• Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and skills.
• Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Course assignments will change based on student needs, design assignments, and curricular rotation. Courses the candidate will teach may include but are not limited to Introduction to Theatrical Design, Advanced Design Seminar, Introduction to Theatre, World of the Arts, and Theatrical Design II: Graphics for Scenery and Lighting. Development of lighting focused design courses as part of overall curricular reexamination is expected.

The candidate will be expected to maintain a scholarship/creative work agenda that is reasonably balanced with university teaching and service requirements. Maintaining current knowledge of entertainment lighting technology and practice is essential, as is continuing membership in professional organizations, such as USITT.

This position will serve as academic advisor to department majors and minors as assigned.

Depending on their secondary skill set, the candidate may design in that field for departmental productions, and/or teach courses featuring that content.

As part of the position’s service component, the candidate will serve on a number of departmental committees, such as Play Selection and Scholarships, as well as various committees at the College and University levels.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The UWW Theatre/Dance Department has a staff of nine faculty/academic staff members, offering BA and BSE degrees, a dance minor, and BFA emphases in design/tech, stage management, and performances. Five live productions are mounted each year, including a musical/opera production in collaboration with the Department of Music and our annual Dancescapes dance concert. The department shares the Greenhill Center for the Arts with the departments of Music and Art & Design.

The department houses two performance spaces: the proscenium Barnett Theatre, and the black box Hicklin Theatre. The department also houses a dedicated dance studio and fully equipped scenic construction and costume construction shops within the Greenhill Center of the Arts.

Our production rotation plan allows students exposure to and practice in a wide variety of genres and production styles, both in performance and design. We are highly collaborative, practically oriented department, with an emphasis on preparing our students for a variety of careers throughout the entertainment industry.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $50,000-$52,000.
