The Jack J. Valenti School of Communication ( https://www.uh.edu/class/communication/ ) at the University of Houston seeks applicants for an assistant professor in a tenure-track position in journalism to begin in the Fall of 2023. Candidates should have research, teaching and/or professional experience in areas such as multimedia storytelling, visual communication, Artificial Intelligence (AI) or big data analytics and their application to journalism and/or implications for news audiences.

Candidates may use a range of methodological approaches, although we especially are interested in innovative approaches, such as computational methods and web-scraping/data mining. Preference will be given to candidates whose work addresses local/community media, or addresses issues of gender, race/ethnicity, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented communities or groups of people.

The candidate will need to have demonstrated a substantive record of research, or the potential thereof. The successful candidate would be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in a developed program that focuses on multimedia journalism, convergent news production, investigative/civic journalism, and global journalism.

We offer a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, including a Hispanic Media Minor and graduate concentrations in Journalism and Mass Communication and Global and Intercultural communication among others. Approximately half of our 2,000 undergraduate majors specialize in journalism and/or media production. In addition to our state-of-the-art media production and communication technology facilities, Valenti has 16 tenure-line and 8 instructional faculty, and faculty enjoy a steady stream of internal and external grants.
