Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Residence Life or designee, the Area Coordinator for North Village has the general responsibility for the management and supervision of Residence Life student staff and programs in the residence halls, counseling with students, and assisting with the coordination of various aspects of the Residence Life program for the University.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for working with fellow Residence Life staff to select, train, supervise, and evaluate all student staff including Resident Assistants and the Assistant Area Coordinators. Directly supervises 13 student staff.
  • Creates an environment in campus housing which contributes to the total learning and development of students.
  • Supervises the Resident Assistants in creating a community atmosphere in their buildings.
  • Partners with University Police to promote safety and security throughout the North Village community.
  • Develops and implements check-in and check-out procedures for the beginning and end of each semester.
  • Mediates roommate conflicts and works with the Assignments Coordinator regarding the room change process for switching rooms, if necessary.
  • Coordinates the room inventory process and corresponding fines, as well as maintains keys throughout the year.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings with student staff to convey administrative information and provide on-going training and development.
  • Coordinates events throughout the year, including but not limited to student staff social events, student staff professional development, and end-of-the year student staff appreciation.
  • Maintains a strong presence in campus housing by interacting and building relationships with residents, custodial supervisors, custodial staff, and student staff.
  • Must be available to students and student staff five days a week. Serves as part of a weekly on-call rotation with other student life professional staff members.
  • Assists in developing and evaluating Housing & Residence Life's mission and goals.
  • Relays student attitudes, reactions, and needs to the other members of the Division of Student Life staff and administrative officers.
  • Develops and leads team to implement and track community development model requirements to improve student belonging.
  • Adjudicates students' housing policy violation cases.
  • Serves on Department and University committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Assists the Associate Director of Residence Life in monitoring budget expenditures for the North Village area.
  • Lives in University-owned housing. Since housing is provided at the Vinings, staff will be responsible for providing support to the property in the event of inclement weather or an emergency (i.e. ice/snow storm). Responsibilities would include distribution of ice melt and/or assist in other means on the property in the event of inclement weather or an emergency. Must maintain emergency supplies provided within the apartment to ensure a quick response, if needed.
  • Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information.
  • Participates in student affairs organizations on the state, regional and/or national level. Encouraged to present on relevant topics at conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Residence Life in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life.
  • Completes performance review process with supervisor/employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.


Relationships:
  • Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor, students, and student workers to plan, coordinate, problem solve, and present information related to mutual goals.
  • Frequent contact with other departments to plan, coordinate, problem solve, and present information related to mutual goals.
  • Occasional contact with parents and the general public to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.


Responsibility for Final Decisions:
  • Functional supervisor of Resident Assistants and Assistant Area Coordinators.
  • Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.
  • Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.
  • Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.


Reports To: Associate Director of Residence Life or designee

Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Education/Skill Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 1-2 years experience in housing and residence life required.
  • Masters degree strongly preferred.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Management background with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population and maintain a positive attitude in time of crisis.
  • Experience in housing or residence life required.
  • Experience with student organization advising or living/learning programs preferred.
  • Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.
