Seattle University’s Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons seeks a Scholarly Communication Officer to play a significant leadership role in the library’s ability to contribute to the transformation of the scholarly communication system and lead change more meaningfully across campus. This position is key to the continued development, advocacy, and management of the Institutional Repository. This position is also key to the development of opportunities for the campus community to further engage in scholarly communication. Focusing on faculty and student researchers, this position will play a key leadership role in research support. Services may include providing outreach and consultations on planning research projects; finding and evaluating information; collecting, organizing and analyzing information; publishing and sharing research; curating and preserving research outputs; and measuring and maximizing impact.   

Scholarly communication is central to academic libraries, but also to the academic enterprise. The library is committed to developing a system of scholarly communication that is both responsive to the needs of the university, and in alignment with our university’s Strategic Directions (https://www.seattleu.edu/strategic-directions/) and in particular Goals 1, 2, and 3 (https://www.seattleu.edu/strategic-directions/#anchorGoals), supports administrators, faculty, staff, and students in their scholarly and creative endeavors.

As a member of the Library Faculty, this position will also serve as an active member of the library liaison program with responsibilities to maintain subject expertise, develop collections, provide specialized research services and instruction, and create resource guides.  

This 12-month non-tenure-track position, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian, is available November 1, 2022, and will report to the Dean, Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons. Rank will be determined by the level of experience from the successful candidate. Qualifications 

Minimum degree required: 

  • MLS (Master of Library Science) from an ALA-accredited program or non-U.S. equivalent. 

The NASIG Core Competencies for Scholarly Communication Librarians are recognized, and inform the minimum and desired qualifications listed. 

Minimum qualifications required: 

  • Interest in the scholarly publishing landscape and scholarly communication lifecycle. 
  • Broad general understanding of repository platforms, data management solutions, publishing platforms, as well as the interrelations between these systems.  
  • Interest and/or experience in educating and advocating for open access publishing.  
  • Teaching and presentation experience, including online contexts and the ability to provide research and consultation services to researchers with varying levels of technical expertise. 
  • Aptitude for adapting to new responsibilities and environments, independent learning, and engagement with technology/software, including excellent technical troubleshooting. 
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. 
  • Willingness to accept and support the mission of Seattle University and its commitment to the vision and values of Jesuit and Catholic higher education.  

Desirable qualifications: 

  • Experience working with publications and scholarly communication in a higher education setting. 
  • Experience/familiarity with bepress or similar publishing platforms as well as other relevant digital and/or data visualization tools.  
  • An understanding of the legislative environment, especially regarding copyright, data management, Open Educational Resources (OER) and public access requirements. 
  • Experience with research metric data sources (e.g., Dimensions, Altmetrics, SciVal, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar etc.). 
  • Knowledge of bibliometric indicators (publication counts, citation counts, h-index, journal metrics, etc.) and methods for the quantification of research impact and issues related to the responsible use of impact metrics and bibliometric data in research evaluation. 
  • Experience implementing projects using project management techniques and managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
