Reporting to the Production Services Manager, the Production Services Assistant/Stage Coordinator will support the performance production needs of the Peabody Institute, both Conservatory and Preparatory. Working as part of a cross-trained production team, The Production Services Assistant/Stage Coordinator is responsible for over 1,000 events, including master classes, rehearsals, performances (music, opera theater and dance), and student recitals. As a member of the team, the Production Services Assistant will assist in all aspects of the Institute’s production activities, but primary duties will be related to staging needs, event setups and performance management.

The Production Services Assistant acts as a liaison among the various individuals involved in a production, including the conductor, artistic directors, musicians, dancers, technical department, and the concert and ensembles team to ensure an excellent and safe production. This position reports to the Production Services Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Independently manage ensemble and chamber group events including all setups, group rehearsals and final performance.
  • Perform basic repair and to Peabody's existing scenery inventory, and work with crew on construction of basic scenery pieces.
  • Manage student recital setups.
  • Supervision and scheduling of work calls with our student stage crew.
  • Create stage plots to share with stage crew.
  • Assist the other Production Assistants. That may include audio/visual setups, as well as lighting setups.
  • The Production Assistant works to provide a professional and safe performance environment to the Peabody Institute students, faculty, staff, patrons and guests.
  • Will be responsible to manage a number of public stage events independently.
  • Hires, trains and manages a crew of 40 student workers.
  • Performs relevant duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work independently and supervise student employees.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Related stage production and audio visual, recording arts experience is required.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree in a music-related field is preferred, but equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 3 to 5 years of concert production or technical theater experience preferred
  • Knowledge of scenic carpentry.
  • Experience in classical music productions and knowledge of concert etiquette.
  • Hours flexible and include daytime and evenings and weekends as appropriate to the staffing needs of the department.
  • Professional demeanor, superior communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts, evenings, and weekends due to performance schedule.
  • Experience with producing events in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with Vectorworks or AutoCAD preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of lighting, video, stage lighting, stage production and rigging.
  • Skills in audio mixing and sound reinforcement preferred.
  • Theatrical Stage management experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, climb for extended periods. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
