Responsibilities
The Catholic Chaplain/Priest, in conjunction with the Director of the Mission and Ministry Center (MMC), promotes and animates the Lasallian Catholic charism of the College, within the department and across campus. The Catholic Chaplain/Priest ensures vibrant liturgical and faith formation offerings, accessible to all students in the Saint Mary's College community. While animating the Lasallian Catholic mission of the College and providing opportunities for students to deepen their faith are the primary focuses of this position, the Chaplain is also expected to reach out and support people of all faith traditions on campus. The work is collegial in a highly collaborative campus environment that is culturally and religiously diverse. Further, the Chaplain/Priest supervises the Assistant Director of Liturgy and Faith Formation.

1. Sacramental Life of the SMC community
  • Oversee all liturgies on campus, work in collaboration with other priests on campus (when possible) and student groups/clubs to celebrate special liturgies reflective of our culturally diverse student community
  • Coordinate and celebrate all Sunday student-led Masses and other special liturgies (Mass of the Holy Spirit, Welcome Mass, Commencement Mass, Ash Wednesday), in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Liturgy and Faith Formation
  • Preside, or find a qualified presider to preach, at all Masses and other paraliturgical events
  • Supervise all responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Liturgy and Faith Formation
  • Coordinate a dynamic and qualified student Liturgy PlanningCommittee, along with the Assistant Director of Liturgy and Faith Formation, to design and deliver all seasonal liturgies, viz. church and academic calendars. Develop and implement services for special feast days
  • Recruit, train and mentor a team of highly qualified liturgical ministers
  • Design and host regular opportunities to explore the Gospels with students as a means of faith sharing and liturgy planning
  • Ensure that liturgical music is appropriate to the season and the community, and that all student vocalists, musicians and cantors are properly trained
  • Ensure that the design and implementation of liturgical environment is appropriate and deepens prayer experiences and reflects liturgical and academic seasons and events
  • Coordinate the work of all those responsible for compiling the worship aids for all liturgies
2. Pastoral Counseling and Support:
  • Available to provide pastoral counseling and support to students and others in campus community
3. Sacramental Preparation:
  • Design, oversee and/or facilitate RCIA program appropriate for student community, engaging partners as is appropriate
  • Design, oversee and/or facilitate Confirmation program for student community, engaging partners as is appropriate.
  • Serve as primary liaison with the Oakland Diocese and the local parish on matters related to the Mission and Ministry Center offering sacraments of the Chapel

4. Student Mentoring and Leadership Development, Vocation Awareness and Promotion:
  • Train and mentor Lasallian Peer Ministers and other student volunteers working within the areas of Chaplain/Priests purview (liturgies, faith formation, RCIA)
  • Collaborate with MMC staff, other campus partners and friends of SMC to offer opportunities to explore religious and lay vocations in the Catholic Church
  • Recruit, train and supervise a small team of student ministers/leaders/sacristans to be available during the summer months to assist groups or individuals with use of Chapel
5. Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Guide monthly Chapel Maintenance Committee meetings, workingwith Assistant Director of Liturgy, Prayer and Faith Formation toprepare agenda and address appropriate action items
  • Oversee the creation of dynamic strategies to increase awareness of and attendance at liturgies and other faith formation opportunities
  • Ensure that liturgies and faith formation opportunities areappropriately publicized
  • Ensure the timely ordering of liturgical supplies and elements for chapel and other worship spaces
  • Ensure the timely payment for contracted goods and services, and purchases, as well as track programming budget
  • Work with De La Salle Christian Brothers and the Administrative Assistant/Chapel Coordinator to ensure times for liturgies are posted in all appropriate locations (electronic and other), establish clarity on roles for collaborative liturgies
  • Oversight of Chapel and Sacristy-work collaboratively withAdministrative Assistant/Chapel Coordinator to manage scheduling,use and maintenance of Chapel. Work with the Assistant Directorof Liturgy and Faith Formation to ensure Chapel and Sacristy arealways clean, stocked and ready for use at all times
6. Other Duties:
  • Collaborate with other Mission and Ministry staff and studentleadership, and campus partners, to strengthen service to thecommunity
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Mission and Ministry Center
  • Provide support to the college community on issues of Catholicidentity through involvement in committees and attending events
  • Other duties assigned by the Director


Experience and Qualifications
Education: REQUIRED: Master of Divinity or equivalent PREFERRED: PhD and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) completed in an inter-religious setting

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): Ability to dynamically andenthusiastically articulate and integrate Lasallian pedagogy/tradition, Catholic teaching and CatholicIntellectual Thought in programming, formation, messaging; and while representing the department oncampus committees. 5+ years in ministry in higher education (or equivalent). Three to five yearsexperience accompanying students from multicultural and multi-religious backgrounds in their spiritualand intellectual development. Experience engaging in interfaith dialogues and celebrations that reflect adeep respect for varying faith traditions and world views. Experience in a Lasallian institution orcompletion of intensive Lasallian formation program, with significant understanding of the charism ofthe De La Salle Christian Brothers, is preferred.

Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical) Spanish speaking highly preferred, experience presiding at Spanish Masses.

Licenses & Certifications (e.g. CPA, RN, etc.): REQUIRED: Ordained Roman Catholic Priest, with ecclesiastical endorsement by the ordinary of the Diocese of Oakland PREFERRED:
