The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a position in Scene Study/Acting at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure track), Associate Professor (eligible for tenure transfer), or Artist-in-Residence. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom, in addition to significant creative work, teaching, and service. The appointment begins August 24, 2023 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 24 & 25, 2023.

Primary Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks:

Primary responsibilities for this position include teaching Scene Study and Advanced Acting courses to our BFA Theatre and Performance and BFA Acting students. Our ideal candidate is Stanislavsky driven and informed, but with an anti-racist and inclusive lens. Candidates whose approaches include other traditions or methods are also encouraged to apply. Directing productions for Emerson Stage - the producing organization for the Department of Performing Arts - is also a requirement of this position. As such, candidates should have experience directing at the collegiate or professional level. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, mentoring students, assisting in the admission audition process, advising on Emerson Stage productions, and serving on department and college committees.

Candidates should be able to address issues of race and representation in all of their courses. The department is engaged in identifying and removing barriers to admission and casting for working-class students and students of color. The successful candidate will bring expertise to this dialogue. Our ideal candidate will also possess a keen and developed awareness of the issues around diversity, inclusion, and equity within the classroom, and within the profession. The candidate should have facility with culturally responsive acting pedagogies and approaches, and possess a fluid overall pedagogy that is able to adapt and expand as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve.

We encourage applications from candidates who use theatre and/or film to expose power relationships and oppressive practices that are normalized in dominant culture and who explore race, gender, sexuality, and class dynamics through their work. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. An ability to work and teach collaboratively, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education beyond the classroom are essential. Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in Acting or professional credits equivalent to an MFA, as well as previous experience teaching acting within a diverse learning community on the college level or in a professional studio setting. This candidate will also have experience directing professionally or on the collegiate level.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation's leading programs in theatrical performance, design, stage management, and theatre education. With a team of 90 full and part-time faculty and theatre staff members, the department enrolls 530 students in nine distinct undergraduate programs and one graduate program. The department offers BFA degrees in Theatre, Theatre Education, Theatre Design Technology, Stage & Screen Design Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre & Performance, and Theatre Education & Performance; general education courses in theatre studies; and an MA/MFA degree in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre. Emerson Stage, the production organization within the department, produces eight to ten fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects, student theatre organizations and ArtsEmerson— the College's professional presenting company.
