Payroll Assistant (Part-time)

Job Summary:
This is a 25 hour per week, hourly position. Responsible for assisting Payroll Coordinator in validating completeness and accuracy of payroll data entered into the accounting system. Aids in the processing of timely and accurate filing and remitting of employer taxes and retirement forms and payroll-related taxes, annuities, garnishments, retirement funds, etc. Acts as backup for the Payroll Coordinator.

Essential Functions:
1. As part of the Payroll Team, responsible for ensuring the following essential functions are completed:
a. Compiling payroll data (e.g., time sheets, absence reports) for entry into payroll system.
b. Processing payroll and ensuring that payroll and payroll related transactions are posted completely and accurately.
c. Creating manual payroll-related journal entries, such as state and federal withholding payments and retirement contributions.
d. Ensuring that all necessary payroll redistributions (reallocations) are performed completely and accurately.
e. Answering authorized queries from social services, Friend of the Court, lending institutions, etc.
f. Monitoring student worker status to ensure payroll withholdings are accurate.
g. Completing reporting for and remittance to Michigan Public Schools Employee’s Retirement System (MPSERS) and Optional Retirement Plans (ORP).
h. Coordinating and monitoring employee deductions with Human Resources.
2. Acts as the backup for Payroll Coordinator during absence by fully processing payroll and performing related functions, as needed.
3. Supports and assists payroll and benefit budgeting and forecasting processes.



Other Duties:
4. Performs other duties as assigned.

Accountabilities:
Under supervision of Payroll Coordinator, is responsible for the accurate processing of and accounting for payroll and payroll related items.

Job Specifications:
High school diploma and three to five years’ experience in accounting or payroll processing required. Payroll experience strongly preferred. Proficiency in accounting systems and spreadsheets required.
