Assistant Professor of Geography

The Department of Geography & Geosciences at Salisbury University seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Geographic Information Science (GIS) to begin in Fall 2023. This is a 10-month teaching position (12 contact hours per semester – typically three or four courses) with the opportunity to engage in research.

Area of Specialization:  Geographic Information Science

Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities: Teach core and advanced undergraduate courses in GIScience. Examples of courses that the applicant might teach include Introduction to GIS, Cartographic Visualization, Statistical Problem Solving in Geography, Advanced GIS, and the University’s First-Year Seminar. Additionally, the candidate will offer courses in their specific area of expertise. The candidate is expected to utilize effective teaching and classroom management strategies that enhance the success of diverse learners. The candidate will also serve on department committees and play a key role in department sponsored events.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or ABD in Geography or related field, with a concentration in Geographic Information Science, required at time of appointment. If ABD, the candidate would be hired at the rank of Instructor.

We seek an energetic individual committed to challenging students with integrated instruction and exploration. Salisbury University’s Department of Geography and Geosciences prides itself on providing students with an advanced and challenging learning experience in GIScience.  While this position is primarily focused on undergraduate teaching with a demonstrated ability to support undergraduate research, opportunities exist to contribute to our graduate program in GIS Management, which was recognized with the 2022 AAG Program Excellence Award for Graduate Education. Candidates are invited to join existing externally-funded outreach activities of the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC).

Preferred Qualifications: Experience using the ESRI suite of GIS products is necessary; the use of open-source GIS software, and python programming skills, are desired.
