The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for a senior Journalism faculty leadership position at Associate Professor rank to join our team that leads a growing and increasingly innovative journalism program. The appointment would begin in January or August 2023.
The successful candidate is expected to have scholarly and practical understanding of the purpose of journalism in society and the knowledge base to teach undergraduate and graduate conceptual courses in journalism, guide students through master's theses or projects and Ph.D. dissertations, and provide leadership for the Journalism Area, including involvement in ongoing course development as we implement a new journalism curriculum. The individual is also expected to make significant contributions to research and scholarship in journalism through high-quality publications and mentoring of graduate students. The candidate will teach two courses per semester with 40 percent of effort devoted to teaching, 40 percent devoted to research, and 20 percent to service. The successful candidate must be willing to work in a collaborative environment.
We seek an individual with expertise in areas including, but not limited to, journalism professional values and norms, sociology of news and media economics; an individual with a forward-looking perspective that reflects a strong grasp of the place of journalism and the nature of journalistic work in a digital, global networked environment. The position does not require an individual immediately out of a newsroom, but the successful candidate will be actively engaged in the current newsroom environment through research on these issues and/or engagement with journalists.
The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication was founded in 2000, after a generous gift from the family of Edward L. Gaylord, owner of the Oklahoma Publishing Company.
