About the Department/Unit

WAMU 88.5 is the leading public radio station in the greater Washington, D.C. area, and DCist is our digital outlet for local news. We provide in-depth and enterprise reporting alongside essential daily news and information that aims to reflect and serve the diverse communities of our region. We believe in news as a public service and put our current and future audience at the center of our work.

Summary/Objective

The Engagement Producer serves as the primary producer and strategist for engagement-focused initiatives for the regional newsroom, including the daily newsletter, bi-weekly membership newsletter, and events. The Engagement Producer is a partner to and primary backup for the Audience Producer, and contributes to WAMU and DCist’s presences on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). This position effectively uses analytics tools to make data-informed decisions about story promotion, new initiatives, and experimental content, while seeking new ways to identify audience needs, meet community members where they are and incorporate their perspectives into the newsroom’s work. This position reports to the Managing Editor, Digital and collaborates with other Audience team members, as needed, to support additional engagement and digital production tasks.

Essential Functions
  1. Engage audiences:Collaborate with reporters and editors to creatively engage the community around individual stories, projects, and other initiatives; identify ways to connect with the audiences and members of WAMU and DCist where they are. Plan and execute engagement initiatives in collaboration with Managing Editor, Audience; Marketing department; or other team members, as needed.
  2. Manage social platforms and presence:In conjunction with the Audience Producer, write and schedule posts for official DCist and WAMU social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).
  3. Produce newsletters:Serve as the primary producer of a daily local newsletter. Write and produce biweekly membership newsletter (every two weeks) as well as future newsletter products currently in development.
  4. Conduct research and analysis: Research news events, developing discussions, and trends worthy of news and social media coverage. Work in collaboration with Growth Editor to translate research and analytics information into actionable insights for the newsroom, particularly as it relates to engagement projects.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • 3-5 years’ experience writing or producing social media and/or engag ement work in a professional journalism environment.
  • Ability to write in a creative, conversational, and distinctive voice while still maintaining accuracy and adhering to editorial standards.
  • Strong editorial judgment
  • Understanding of established and emerging engagement strategies and social media platforms .
  • Attention to detail and the ability to copy-edit quickly.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn, how to use analytics to guide editorial decision-making.
  • Creativity and a comfort level with experimentation
  • A collaborative and team-focused attitude
