Reporting to the Manager of Payroll, this position will play a key role in co-managing and supervising the Payroll Office operations on a daily basis ensuring that payroll deadlines are met and employees are paid on-time. The Assistant Manager will serve as workstream lead for the implementation of the University’s Workday Platform – Payroll module.

The Assistant Manager will assist the Payroll Manager in developing payroll policies and procedures and work in collaboration with departments to approve the processing of regular and off cycle checks when requested by departments and verify the accuracy of overpayment calculations. The Assistant Manager will also update taxable wages, deductions and taxes to ensure the accuracy of data for year-end processing and assist with coordinating the collecting of information requested by auditors,and complete state reporting on a monthly and quarterly basis.

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily Workday operations of the Payroll Office. Answer policy and procedure questions related to Workday. Serve as payroll SME on current Workday processing and procedures. Participate in Workday HCM projects involving strategy, implementation support, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) optimization related to Information technology (IT) operations, business processes, security, and data integrity for the Workday applications. Coordinate training of newly hired staff. Act on behalf of the Payroll Manager in their absence. Manage the payroll function. Coordinate the work of the Payroll Clerk Sr. staff to keep everyone working on schedule for each of the pays. Resolve system issues and work with IT staff when needed. Create and support complex Workday payroll calculations and Workday optimization. Contact HR, Benefits, Student Employment and others for information or problem resolution. Ensure all steps are completed and issues resolved before confirming the pay. Work in collaboration with department to: approve the processing of checks when requested by departments, verify the accuracy of overpayment calculations, process reversals and adjustments in Workday, update taxable wages, deductions and taxes to ensure the accuracy of data for year-end processing, coordinate the collecting of information requested by auditors, complete state reporting on a monthly and quarterly basis and assist the Payroll Manager in developing payroll policies and procedures.

 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field. At least four (4) years' experience in a payroll/accounting environment while performing supervisory responsibilities. Computer skills including spreadsheet, word processing and database capabilities. Strong communications skills and the ability to communicate with all levels of employees and maintain control when dealing with an upset employee. Strong organizational, problem-solving and time management skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

A minimum of three (3) years of enterprise resource planning (ERP), HCM implementation, and upgrade experience (Workday preferred). Knowledge of University policies, Federal, State and Local tax regulations, Ohio retirement systems policies, payroll policies and procedures.
