CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The College of Engineering is recruiting for a Computer Engineer/Computer Scientist in the UD Center for Neutron Science. This advertisement lists the specific tasks/responsibilities for the most junior-level position. The University of Delaware has won a competitive award of more than $7 million over a five-year period from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and will use it to develop the next generation of neutron scattering instrumentation through the creation of the UD Center for Neutron Science. Neutron scattering is a nanoscale measurement technique that is complementary to X-ray and light scattering as a means to probe the structure of materials. Since neutron scattering requires a high-flux neutron source, measurements are carried out at large national facilities such as the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) in Gaithersburg, MD. UD center staff will work on-site at the NCNR, helping design and build the next generation of neutron scattering instrumentation that will be used worldwide.

The Computer Scientist position will reside at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) in Gaithersburg, MD. The NCNR is a national user facility providing a source of intense beams of neutrons and maintaining and developing a suite of over 20 research instruments. The center serves more than 2000 scientists and engineers annually. Further information about the NCNR can be found at the web site http://www.ncnr.nist.gov. The NCNR is in the process of a facility-wide upgrade of the data acquisition and control systems used on its neutron scattering instruments

This position is supported by external funds. Continuation of this position is contingent upon performance and continued availability of external funding. Notice of non-renewal is not required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs computer software development for data acquisition and control related to materials research carried out using facilities at the laboratory. Receives instruction from other software developers on how best to carry out core programming tasks.

• Implements instrument control software, in Java, based on existing designs.
• Creates automated tests for system verification.
• Writes developer and user documentation.
• Maintains/debugs the existing software system.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Provides continuous customer support
• Serves as the direct point of contact with the customers,
• Responds promptly to software and hardware issues at the instruments
• Provides quick workable solutions, as well as permanent long-term fixes
• Informs the customer of the progress, and records the details of actions taken

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or other related field with four years related computing experience or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
• Prior experience programming in a professional environment either individually or with a group. Familiarity with software life-cycle preferred.
• Experience in object oriented design and development in Java.
• Experience working with instrumentation and/or hardware.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to interact well with people of all backgrounds and experiences.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATONS:

The work is to be carried out at the National Center for Neutron Research at the National Institute for Standards and Technology. Candidate must satisfy all safety and security concerns required to work onsite.
