Job Description:

SUNY Empire State College is currently seeking applicants for a Director of Assessment and Program Review.  Reporting to the Executive Director for Institutional Effectiveness, the Director for Assessment and Program Review (State Title: Staff Associate) manages and supports all facets of the assessment of student learning outcomes processes, periodic formal program reviews, and provides support for accreditation activities.  The Director supports the Provost and Executive Director in developing and executing a strategic vision and plan for assessment, program review, and student learning improvement, and the maturation of an assessment culture at the college.  Serving as collaborator and project manager, the individual works with faculty, leadership, and staff in developing assessment and review activities that are meaningful, empirical, and time and cost effective, improving learning experiences and programmatic effectiveness.  The individual is also the academic affairs contact regarding assessment related data and aides in college and specialty accreditation activities.

The position is situated within the college's office of Decision Support and demands the ability to solve complex problems by gathering data, reasoning logically, drawing valid conclusions, and writing clear and concise reports.  The individual will be a collaborative, creative, independent problem-solver, and have ability to work with diverse faculty and staff from multiple disciplines and functions.  Above all, the director will be committed to improving student and institutional outcomes related to student learning and success, will possess a deep understanding of accreditation requirements, and collaborate with others to decide how to best achieve continuous and sustainable improvement.

Specific duties include: 

  • Work collaboratively and effectively with faculty and administrators across the college in planning and development of assessment initiatives, developing measurable outcomes and implementing comprehensive approaches to assess educational units and student learning outcomes of academic programs.
  • Collaborate with academic units to identify assessment needs, data collection strategies, conduct analysis, and effective reporting and use of  results to improve student learning outcomes and "closing the loop." 
  • Develop and manage assessment and program review operations, workflows, processes, data collection, schedules, and communication.
  • Prepare timely, professional reports (oral and written) and presentation materials based on findings and disseminate information internally and/or for external reporting.
  • Communicate regularly across the college to ensure transparency and clarity related to assessment and program review activities; and effectively promote a culture of assessment.
  • Develop and maintain thorough, organized documentation and detail to support current and future assessment and accreditation needs.
  • Build and/or maintain an accessible site to document the assessment efforts of the college and an evidence repository for accreditation efforts.
  • Research and develop or acquire assessment tools and evaluation instruments (e.g., rubrics) that include attention to assessment of diversity and inclusion practices in teaching and learning.
  • Develop training materials and provide professional development workshops and webinars regarding assessment and program review for faculty, staff, administrators, and students.
  • Aid the Provost and accreditation liaison officer in ensuring compliance with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education regarding policies and standards of accreditation, etc.
  • Aid in the development and implementation of strategic planning and related assessment.
  • Design and execute strategies to promulgate a culture of assessment utilizing strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field such as educational assessment, research and measurement, social sciences, or other related discipline.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the assessment of learning outcomes in higher education, accreditation, and/or curricula development.
  • Demonstrated competence with quantitative and qualitative methods and practices in higher education.
  • Experience with assessment related accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrated competence with data collection and analysis and generating written summaries, reports, and presentation materials.
  • Demonstrated competence in outcomes assessment, assessment design, and/or evaluation methodologies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with highly sensitive issues.
  • Highly developed technical skills, including experience with survey systems, statistical methodology, and data visualization tools.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Experience developing and delivering professional development related to assessment for faculty, staff, and administrators.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in related field.
  • Proficiency with statistical packages (such as SPSS, SAS).
  • Experience survey research methods and the extraction and manipulation of data from a variety of systems.
  • Experience with formal assessment processes.
  • Experience leading/chairing university-wide assessment councils/committees.
  • Higher education teaching experience.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and work efficiently in a dynamic environment.

Special Information:

  • This position is located in Saratoga Springs, NY.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: SL4/$75,000.
