Chemical Engineering Tenure-track Faculty Position

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position.

With a history of over 100 years of innovation and creativity in research and education, the department is one of the premier chemical engineering departments in the country and represents one of seven academic departments in the nationally 4th ranked College of Engineering. The student body includes approximately 200 undergraduate, 80 Masters, and 100 PhD students. The diverse and collaborative faculty includes 21 tenure-track, 1 research-track and 1 teaching-track faculty complemented by courtesy and adjunct faculty. Carnegie Mellon University is located in Pittsburgh PA, an affordable city to live in with outstanding cultural offerings, abundant green spaces, excellent public schools, and an easily accessible airport that offers 125 nonstop destinations in the US and abroad. Pittsburgh is the home of several other world-class research universities, a growing technology industry that includes Google and Duolingo, and has a major research hospital (UPMC) that our faculty collaborate with.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in chemical engineering or a closely related field of engineering or science. We are open with respect to rank and research area; applicants with an experimental focus on biological, biomedical, or bioengineering aspects of chemical engineering will be of particular interest. For senior level applicants, teaching experience and an internationally recognized record of research are expected. Carnegie Mellon promotes collaboration, and thus we welcome applicants with an interest in a joint position with another Department. We highly value applicants who are driven to nurture an inclusive and culturally diverse environment in our department and, more broadly, at Carnegie Mellon. We will actively seek a diverse applicant pool in terms of gender, sexual orientation, race, veteran status, and disability.

Carnegie Mellon is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a range of intellectual and cultural dimensions. Carnegie Mellon welcomes faculty applicants who will contribute to this diversity through their research, teaching and service, including women, members of minority groups, protected veterans, individuals with disabilities, and others who would contribute in different ways. Carnegie Mellon University seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) that assists with dual-career searches.

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a PhD in chemical engineering or a field of engineering or science closely related to chemical engineering.

Application Instructions

Interested candidates should submit applications electronically, which should contain a cover letter, curriculum vitae and three statements: a statement of research experience and interests; a statement of teaching experience and interests; and a statement describing how the candidate has contributed to and plans to contribute to diversity, inclusion, and equity. The Search Committee will solicit names of references and their contact information after the initial review, and only for a subset of applicants. These applicants will be notified in advance before letters are requested.

Review of applications will begin on September 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. The expected start date is August 1, 2023. E-mail inquiries concerning this position may be sent to the Search Committee by emailing Samantha Seroka ( sseroka@andrew.cmu.edu ).

Carnegie Mellon Univesity

Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
