BCJ Instructor

The Inmate Instructor is responsible for classroom management, students’ curriculum and provides instruction for HSE, ESL and computer classes during a class period. Additionally, the instructor will adhere to the protocols of Bergen County Jail and have a background check performed by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Knowledge of reading and math skills and concepts.
• Broad knowledge of Microsoft Word programs: Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Supervision of students in a correctional facility setting/classroom environment.
• Good communication skills.
• Subject to BCSD background check and attend jail orientation prior to entering jail.
• Must abide by BCJ protocol which is reviewed upon jail orientation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ability to multitask; will be expected to teach multi-level and multi-subjects within a class period;
• Good classroom management;
• Interactive with students;
• Facilitates instruction using alternative delivery methods as needed;
• Participates in the assessment of student learning outcomes;
• Implements changes as necessary to maintain a successful classroom;
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

• Instructors are expected to be flexible and encouraging of students;
• Possess the ability to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective, and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed.
• Additionally, instructors must understand the comprehensive role of Bergen County Jail and cooperate and work harmoniously with students, other instructor(s), other civilian jail personnel and officers.
• Instructors will follow all Bergen County Jail policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines as they relate to this position.

Qualifications

• College degree, preferably in education.
• Prior classroom teaching experience.
• Prior experience writing lesson plans and curriculum, but not necessary.
• Class schedule 9-2:30 or 4-6/8:30. Need one teacher in the morning/early afternoon and one teacher in the afternoon/evening.
