Job Details

The History Department at San Francisco State University offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in East Asian History, beginning August 9, 2023. We seek a colleague whose research interests focus on East Asian history since 1500, subfield open. The successful candidate will be an innovative scholar and creative teacher, who will be expected to teach East Asian history, courses in their research subfield, and survey courses in World History, as well as methods courses for majors and courses that serve the general education program. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment – through their research, teaching, and service – to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

The History Department is committed to the success of our students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and we particularly serve historically underrepresented communities. A majority of our majors are students of color or first-generation college students. Our curriculum is oriented towards broad coverage of the past chronologically, geographically, and thematically, and it also places particular emphasis on social justice and equity.

The successful candidate will support both our general education commitments and departmental curriculum at the undergraduate (BA, Minor, and Honors Certificate) and graduate (MA and Graduate Certificate in History Education) levels. We value progressive, effective, and inclusive pedagogy, and the successful applicant will be able to teach courses ranging from first-year surveys to graduate seminars. Applicants will also be encouraged to add their own courses and shape their areas of the curriculum over time.

In addition, the successful candidate will produce meaningful scholarly work. This position is open to applicants with scholarly interests in any subfield of modern East Asian history. We are a department committed to shared governance, and all members are expected to perform service both within and outside of the department. Scholarship and service that benefits and creates connections to local communities are also particularly valued.

The mission of San Francisco State University is to create and maintain an environment for learning that promotes respect for and appreciation of scholarship, freedom, human diversity, and the cultural mosaic of the City of San Francisco and the Bay Area; to promote excellence in instruction and intellectual accomplishment; and to provide broadly accessible higher education for residents of the region and state, as well as the nation and world. To fulfill its mission, the University is committed to the following goals:

  • Attracting, retaining and graduating a highly diverse student body Providing disciplinary and interdisciplinary liberal arts and professional education that is academically rigorous and intellectually challenging Providing curricula that reflect all dimensions of human diversity, and that encourage critical thinking and a commitment to social justice Recruiting, retaining and supporting a diverse faculty whose teaching demonstrates an active engagement with their individual fields of study and whose creative and scholarly work is an extension of the classroom, laboratory or studio Employing a staff and administration reflecting the diversity of our student community and the values of the campus; Fostering a collegial and cooperative intellectual environment that includes recognition and appreciation of differing viewpoints and promotes academic freedom within the University community; and Serving the communities with which its students and faculty are engaged.

The position requires undergraduate and graduate teaching in East Asian History and World History, as well as methods courses for majors, courses in one’s area of specialty, and courses that serve the general education program. It also requires mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing program of scholarship in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments.
