Job Details

Description

Headquartered at Carnegie Mellon University, the Delphi research group was founded in 2012 to advance the theory and practice of epidemic forecasting. Pre-pandemic our focus was seasonal influenza; now it's COVID. Currently our focus is on developing and maintaining COVIDcast, which provides the nation's largest repository of diverse, geographically-detailed, real-time indicators of COVID activity in the U.S. We work on the full data pipeline: several of the underlying data sources (on which these indicators are built) would not exist or be publicly available without our efforts; and on the other end, we use these indicators to power our nowcasting and forecasting models. COVIDcast is used regularly by public health officials, government agencies, data journalists, healthcare companies, financial firms, and fellow modelers. We work closely with the CDC, and are currently a CDC Center of Excellence for Forecasting (one of two nationally).

We are looking for a talented executive director to work with the rest of the Delphi leadership team to actively drive the strategy and vision for Delphi, translate this into an implementation roadmap, and oversee this implementation (as well as all administration and general operations of Delphi: a team of ~40 data scientists and software engineers). This person will ideally have significant experience in managing/leading similarly-sized efforts. We are looking for the "right" person for the job, and can be flexible with respect to terms (schedule and geography).

Duties:
● Serve as a thought partner, working together with the rest of the Delphi leadership team to actively drive the strategy and vision for Delphi
● Implement the strategic vision of Delphi
○ Take responsibility for all Delphi “production deliverables”
○ Develop a multi year road map in support of the vision
● Oversee all administration and general operations of Delphi
○ Provide counsel and comprehensive support to the rest of the Delphi leadership team on finance, personnel, operations and other policy matters
○ Identify and help resolve issues that affect the overall functioning of the team and Delphi's systems
○ Oversee and manage resource allocation
● Develop, cultivate and manage strategic relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
○ Lead Delphi’s strategic communications and partnership efforts
○ Explore and identify new proposals and opportunities for funding and lead periodic meetings to review and select
○ Together with the rest of the Delphi leadership team, work to build and scale the impact of Delphi’s work

Qualifications

Experience and Qualifications:
● Must believe in Delphi's vision and become committed to it
● Bachelor's degree and 5+ years experience with managing/leading similarly-sized efforts
● Experience with managing collaborative goal-setting, e.g., quarterly OKRs
● Experience with the software development life cycle, especially in GitHub
● Experience with managing and pursuing funding opportunities
● Familiarity with public health & epidemiology is highly desired
● Familiarity with basic data science & computational statistics is a plus

Carnegie Mellon Univesity

Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
