The Applied Systems Group helps organizations apply best practices, tools, and techniques at the rate needed to keep pace with evolving opportunities, threats, and risks. The goal of the team is to provide expertise in a wide range of skills throughout the software development lifecycle with a focus on holistic cybersecurity and engineering approaches to software intensive systems. Our team must keep pace with rapid changes to the computing and software landscape and, in some cases, the computing has outpaced the methods. It is incumbent upon us to generate novel approaches to meet specific and unique sponsor needs.

Position Summary:

Working alongside other technical experts in the institute, you will be involved in conceiving, developing, testing, and deploying, and maintaining infrastructure and software systems to improve the capabilities of CERT customers. You will participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle and will contribute to key decisions regarding design, technology selection, and architecture of secure and resilient systems. You will be expected to function within cross-domain teams; learn new skills, programming languages, and technologies as necessary; and solve meaningful problems through technical innovation. Working directly with sponsors and end users you will analyze customer requirements and provide novel solutions.

Requirements:
  • BS in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or related field of study, with 10 years of relevant experience, OR a MS in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or related field, with 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This may include national travel to sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion.
  • You will be subject to a background check and must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

  • Experience developing in multiple layers of the modern software stack
  • Familiarity with virtualized infrastructures, cloud computing, and containerization
  • Familiarity with the internals of the Linux operating system
  • Familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD concepts
  • Strong analysis, debugging, and problem-solving skills

Carnegie Mellon Univesity

Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
