Executive Fellow, Community Engagement

Job Details

The Office of the President at Carnegie Mellon University is committed to building and maintaining strong partnerships with local and regional partners in the non-profit, community, and government sectors. CMU’s robust growth has made a significant contribution to Pittsburgh’s revitalization, supporting programs and activities that benefit all of Pittsburgh’s communities.

The Executive Fellow for Community Engagement will lead key community engagement initiatives and establish a more formal network of communication with community partners, internal stakeholders, and elected officials, with the goal of ensuring that CMU’s work is informed and enhanced by a broad range of factors.

CMU’s administrative offices, departments and institutes run many high-impact outreach projects, from the Center for Shared Prosperity, to the Gelfand Center’s STEM Ambassadors program; to Metro21’s smart cities research partnerships; to the Robotics Institute’s online curriculum piloted locally and used by over 16,000 schools internationally. One major aspect of the Executive Fellow’s job will be to work in close collaboration with the individuals across campus to support these projects and find opportunities to celebrate the work and coordinate between them. Additionally, this person will work in step with the Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives and Engagements and the Associate Vice President of Government Relations to ensure strategies and engagement activities are in line with CMU’s overall community, economic, and government relations strategies.

This one-year fellowship reports to the Chief of Staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate on rollout of strategic initiatives, including for example those directed at improving STEM education for Pittsburgh’s K-12 students and deepening the University’s commitment to the Greater Hazelwood community.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key partners in the city and the region, including non-profits, community development organizations, small businesses, and local government officials.
  • Unite outreach initiatives occurring across campus departments and institutes.
  • Lead ongoing and two-way communication in the community and beyond, potentially consisting of online content, a newsletter, or a comprehensive community impact report.
  • Build a system of evaluation by which outreach program performance might be measured.
  • Coordinate strategies and engagement activities with CMU’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts to ensure interactions are inclusive and equitable on campus and off campus.
  • Represent the university at community meetings and hearings – many will occur during non-traditional work hours.
You should demonstrate:
  • An understanding and passion for community and economic development
  • A strong commitment toward strengthening CMU’s community relationships
  • Understanding of Pittsburgh’s political and community landscape
  • A strong sense of diplomacy and an ability to context switch easily is essential to the success of this position; Southwestern Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh have a myriad of social issues and political interests, all of which are significant to CMU’s long-term success.
  • Strong writing skills are a critical piece of this role; this person will create documents including leadership briefings and grant proposals that enhance CMU’s community engagement efforts.
  • Strong relationship management
  • Detail-orientation and strong organizational skills
  • Integrity, excellence, passion, and flexibility
  • Inclusion, collaboration, and cultural sensitivity
Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within the Carnegie Mellon University. Inclusion, collaboration, and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years related experience required.
    • Or a combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
