Position Overview

The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas (KU) is seeking exceptional candidates for a tenure-track or tenured position at the associate or full professor in the area of cybersecurity. This position is expected to begin August 2023. Advanced assistant professors will be given consideration.

Come and engage with students in our newly remodeled building, where we’ve focused design and technology around the student experience and future media. If you’re looking for colleagues who share your excitement about working with students, who anticipate future media developments, and who are eager to create new ways to understand and engage audiences, then KU is eager to meet you.

Candidates should have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse, and collaborative environment. Applicants should have research productivity and teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas: disinformation, information security, computational social science, data journalism, information norms and practices, social media analytics, and communication technology.

This position is created as part of KU’s Research Rising aimed at building high-profile, interdisciplinary, multi-investigator projects competitive for significant federal funding opportunities and achieving national preeminence in several particularly significant subjects of inquiry. The person hired for the position will work with an interdisciplinary team on cybersecurity.

The School has a state-of-the-art experimental research laboratory which includes physiology data collection, eye tracking and facial emotion recognition. The School is also home to the Center for Digital Inclusion, as well as the Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations.

Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. degree in journalism, mass communication, information science, or a related field. Applicants should have academic credentials and research portfolio that would support appointment as a tenure-track or tenured faculty member.

At the University of Kansas, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are an important part of our culture and university strategic plan. Applications from members of underrepresented groups are encouraged, noting the value that differences bring to our organization, students, staff, faculty, and community. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment.

Founded in 1865, KU is a designated Carnegie comprehensive doctoral research university and one of only 34 public members of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). The university enrolls more than 27,000 students and offers students and faculty opportunities to collaborate in its programs.

The University of Kansas is in Lawrence, a city with a population exceeding 95,000. The community is known for its support of the University, education, arts, and research and regularly appears in various “best town” listings. Lawrence is centrally located between the State of Kansas Capitol in Topeka and the major metropolitan community of Kansas City.

University of Kansas

In 1866, the University of Kansas welcomed the first class of 55 students to an unfinished building on a modest hill called Mount Oread. From that treeless ridge, KU flourished into the state's flagship institution — a premier research university that claims nearly 30,000 enrolled students across five campuses. Together, Jayhawks power Kansas and transform the world.

We call ourselves Jayhawks. These mythical birds embody the KU community's guiding values: perseverance, positivity, and restless innovation. We fly high because we start at the top.

You can get a job many places. But, if you want to feel, understand, know and believe you are changing the world, become a Jayhawk!

At the University of Kansas, we celebrate and value differences in perspectives, experiences and cultures.
