Audio Production Manager, KUFM

Montana Public Radio (KUFM/MTPR) invites applications for an Audio Production Manager to join their team. This position will be the head of the production team. This position is responsible for the management or supervision of classified staff or contract professional employees such as audio producers and program producers. This position requires a high level of independence to produce excellent radio programming for the MTPR audience. The Audio Production Manager works under supervision of the MTPR Program Director to produce a variety of radio/audio programs, segments and other audio for broadcast. The position must adhere to professional broadcast standards and FCC regulations. Position requires significant technical knowledge of broadcast board and recording techniques. Producer must possess ability to interact positively and professionally with public, staff, and guests of Broadcast Media Center.

Duties will include:
  • Supervisory responsibility for all audio production staff, temporary staff, and interns.
  • Responsible for all content and technical quality for audio on MTPR.
  • Chief liaison between the production team and master control operations, engineering, audio producers, news, digital, and development.
  • Head of scheduling for audio studios and control rooms.
  • Primary contact for recording for all outside and off campus scheduling requests.
  • Training of production and other staff with existing and new technologies and best practices to ensure excellent audio quality.
  • Give feedback to audio producers on the quality of their sound and ways to improve the quality of their programs.
  • Producer on-call – Primary contact for last minute requests and needs for quick turnarounds and contact for emergency audio issues. We are a 24 hour operation.
  • Work with technical staff to keep the operation up-to-date with the needs in state of the art audio recording, broadcasting and producing gear.
  • Primary producer contact and support for the engineering and technical team on all major upgrades to equipment and processes.
  • Head of remote recording for the Montana Public Radio network. Responsible to plan and help execute all remote recordings and live broadcasts from locations away from the station.
  • Chief audio engineer for all the live sessions including but not limited to mixing election coverage, live music and other live events from our studios. Primary mix audio engineer for all multi-track and complex sessions.
  • Develop and maintain the best practices and procedures for releases and permissions from artists to have use on air and online.
  • Work with online digital editor to produce web ready audio for online and social media platforms.
  • Primary contact and producer to work with the program director on the new DJB automation system.
  • Stay up-to-date on latest audio technology to help move radio station operation into the future.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Hosting and producing local music programs for MTPR.
  • Producing segments and programs for MTPR.
  • Recording, editing and engineering variety of music, talk, remote, and other radio recordings and live broadcasts.
  • Preparing, producing, editing and archiving of audio files for on-air broadcasts.
Upon completion of training, the incumbent will have developed:
  • Ability to work independently to provide excellent programming for the MTPR audience.
  • Ability to work with engineering staff to identify replacement equipment.
Required Skills
  • Pleasant voice and speaking manner, clear diction
  • Ability to operate complicated mixing board and control panel in prescribed sequences
  • Knowledge of audio recording and engineering techniques
  • Knowledge of microphones and ability to select appropriate microphones
  • Ability to follow instructions on daily operations log to load audio as necessary to broadcast programming
  • Familiarity with FCC rules governing broadcast program content (Radio only)
  • Ability to edit audio using digital audio editing software
  • In depth knowledge of selected musical genre, artists, composers, and performance techniques
  • Ability to ask insightful and knowledgeable questions of variety of guests
  • Ability to work under moderate stress in live broadcast program situations
  • Participate with audio production staff in staff meetings and planning sessions.

Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and two (2) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of experience in radio or audio production management.
  • College degree in media arts, audio production, audio engineering, performing arts technology or related fields.
  • Background and proven experience to produce, engineer, record, edit, and archive quality radio programming for a regional and national audience.
  • Background and proven experience with digital mixing boards, microphones, digital recording devices, and other audio production equipment.
  • Background and proven experience with using digital audio editing software to produce multi-track audio segments and programs.
  • Background and proven experience showing ability to work in team setting.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary: $19.023/hr –Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .
