Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, this position supports the instructional and scholarly mission of the Virginia Tech Honors College. The Honors College seeks to inspire and facilitate an extraordinary undergraduate education for a diverse student body of exceptional motivation. Utilizing a flexible curricular framework with a strategic array of experiences, opportunities, and facilities, the College pioneers progressive, innovative approaches to undergraduate education that can be scaled up across the university. The Honors College is distinctive in combining a structured disciplinary education with an open-ended, collaborative, and transdisciplinary discovery process. Students collaborate with one another across disciplines. The College’s Calhoun Honors Discovery Program extends this approach to facilitate student work with industry and non-profit partners.

This is a Collegiate Faculty position (non-tenure long term renewable contracts with promotion path) at the rank of assistant professor. Responsibilities include developing and teaching interdisciplinary and collaborative courses, seminars, and workshops, supporting undergraduate research programs for honors students, and contributing to the overall development of Honors signature programs. Applicants should possess thorough theoretical and technical knowledge in technology, creativity, and innovation and the abilities to mentor undergraduate students in developing interdisciplinary capacities, to guide experiential learning, and foster purpose-driven engagement. The appointee will be expected to conduct research, primarily within the scholarship of teaching and learning and secondarily, perhaps, within the appointee’s disciplinary specialization, and participate in college- and university-level service, committee work, and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• A terminal degree in a discipline related to technology, creativity, and innovation
• A strong record of educational and/or professional accomplishments
• A proven ability to work collaboratively
• Experience with or demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction and a willingness to cross disciplinary boundaries to address complex societal challenges
• Demonstrated ability to mentor students in developing interdisciplinary capacities
• A commitment to diversity in the university community

Preferred Qualifications

• An interest in student-centered pedagogies and/or assessment
• Experience teaching in studio classes
• A desire to advise and teach a highly motivated student body drawn from a broad spectrum of disciplines
• Experience working with professional or industry partners, including non-profit and extension services
• An interest in professional ethics and social responsibility
• Experience working with a dynamic, diverse, and highly motivated student body drawn from a broad spectrum of disciplines
