The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is an integral component of the UW School of Medicine and it shares UW Medicine’s Mission to ‘Improve the Health of the Public.’ We strive to accomplish this by providing the best care we can today, conducting research to develop better treatments for tomorrow, and inspiring and training the next generation of healthcare professionals for the Pacific Northwest. Our core values include openness, transparency, integrity, engagement, collaboration, and mutual respect. We embrace and value diversity in all of its aspects. The department is the third largest department within the School of Medicine and has a $78 M operating budget. Department faculty members provide clinical services and teach at health care facilities in the Puget Sound area and at several rural locations in the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). The department also has a robust research portfolio nearly $35 M annually in sponsored projects. Educational programs include a nationally renowned scientist-practitioner psychology internship program and post-doctoral clinical and research fellowships, a required medical student clerkship for 240 medical students per year at 30 sites across the WWAMI region, a nationally competitive psychiatry residency with more than 70 psychiatry residents in Seattle and in two regional residency tracks in Idaho and Montana, and subspecialty fellowships in addiction, child and adolescent, consultation-liaison, and geriatric psychiatry.

Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) is a large tertiary medical center affiliated with the University of Washington School of Medicine and serving a four-state area. Seattle Children’s provides a wide continuum of programming for children in the Pacific Northwest that address community-based care and prevention. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Health is a focus program at SCH and receives extraordinary support for its important role in the Northwest.

The University of Washington’s Division of Child Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Seattle Children’s is seeking candidates for one full or part-time academic psychologist at the rank of Assistant Professor without tenure due to funding (WOT) in either the clinician-teacher or faculty-scientist pathway. Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.  We anticipate the hire will take place in Summer/Fall 2022. Please note: only full-time positions are eligible for visa sponsorship.

This position will serve as Director for the Pediatric Feeding Program (PFP), which is housed within the Seattle Children’s Autism Center. The psychologist will join the Pediatric Feeding Program (PFP), which is one of the only feeding programs in the Pacific Northwest where an interdisciplinary team of experts provides comprehensive, team-based care for children ages 1 through 18 and their families with complex feeding concerns. Our team includes child psychologists, a gastroenterologist, registered dietitians, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, licensed behavior analysts, social workers and nurse practitioners. The program also collaborates with healthcare providers from other Seattle Children’s clinics, such Neurodevelopmental Medicine and the Aerodigestive Program. Services are provided both in person at the Seattle Children’s Autism Center as well as via videoconference. Services are delivered across a continuum of care, which includes parent psychoeducation (e.g., classes), monthly check-ins, weekly visits, and intensive outpatient care. Our program values the integration of clinical work and research to evaluate the best ways to help children and families with feeding disorders.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate also will participate in our University of Washington APA accredited internship program, postdoctoral fellowship program, and supervise clinical and school psychology practicum students.

The overall role of this position is to provide direct clinical oversight of the PFP.  A primary expectation is that the Director will improve the PFP’s operational infrastructure in an effort to advance Seattle Children’s mission, which includes the promotion of social justice and community engagement. They will also lead expansion of the PFP tiered program delivery initiatives in order to increase service access and reduce wait times for patients served by our hospital. Specific tasks include:

  • Drive continuous performance improvement, quality improvement, education and research efforts delivered by the Pediatric Feeding Program team Represent the Pediatric Feeding Program to the leadership team Provide supervision to practicum students, psychology and psychiatry residents, and program staff Consult with other departments (e.g. GI) and hospital inpatient unit staff on milieu program development and individual case planning, as it relates to patients within or referred to the PFP.

Positive factors for consideration include but are not limited to expertise in working with an inter-disciplinary team, and knowledge and experience with the neurodiverse populations.
