Job Description

The Assistant Director, Employer Relations supports the Central Career Services mission to promote, manage and grow the University’s employer relations function. Under the guidance of the Director of Career Services, Assessment & Student Success, the Assistant Director will serve as the first point of contact for current and future constituents who seek to engage with Syracuse University students for career-based opportunities, while engaging in inter-University conversations with the individual school/college career units on career opportunities for our undergraduate students. S/he will be tasked with increasing the quantity, quality and variety of job and internship opportunities, and engaging employers/alumni/parents to provide programs and services to help students compete effectively for opportunities of interest.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and 5 – 10 years of related experience.
  • Proven experience with developing and maintaining positive working relationships with external organizations.
  • Database management experience required. Strong Excel skills. Knowledge of and experience with Handshake highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with the internship and employment recruitment process, desirable.
  • Ability to travel and work weekends and evenings as required. 10-15% travel.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with a heavy emphasis on creative thinking and reasoning abilities that are demonstrated through oversight of multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal and team development skills, including the presence and pose needed to interact and develop strong relationships with various constituencies (faculty, staff, students, employers and alumni).
  • Well-developed and effective public speaking and presentation skills with the ability to positively influence on-and-off campus groups.
  • Knowledge of career trends, employer relations, workplace changes, impacts of technology and social media, etc.
  • Ability to think strategically, sustainably and analytically with the ability to move items from vision to action.
  • Ability to track data and metrics of employer engagement and outcomes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, be flexible and adapt well to an evolving campus.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse student population and serve as an advocate for that diversity.
  • Ability to collaborate with others to support initiatives across units.
Responsibilities

Manage and support the development of partnerships between SU Colleges and Schools, the University, and external communities (corporations, public sector and not-for-profit entities) to expand the number and type of experiential learning, internship and full-time employment opportunities for Syracuse University students. Partner with the Director of Career Services within the Central Career Office to develop and expand internship and employment opportunities. Oversee and participate in site visits (in-person and virtual) to include local, regional, and national employers. Act as an information resource to employers looking to grow their relationship with the University, as well as serving as the first point of contact for new company partnerships. Serve as a central point of contact career service programming and Career Fairs that cross college/school lines.

Pursue and maintain strong internal relationships with the multiple career service units within Syracuse University in support of their mission(s) for employer relations. Collect and manage data related to all college and school employer relations work including internships, mentoring opportunities, and job placement. Work closely with university Corporate and Foundation Relations team to coordinate these efforts within an all-university perspective. Track data and metrics of employer engagement and outcomes.

Oversee operations within the Employer Relations function of the department. Manage budget and determine allocation of resources for recruiting, events (Career Fairs, Industry Days, Immersion Programming), and employer relations.

Collaborate with other Career Services staff to develop outreach programming and customized workshops centered on career exploration. Coordinate employment connections between employers and student organizations with similar interests across campus. Plan, implement and evaluate special programs (e.g. Transition into the Workplace, Diversity Conversation Circles, etc.), utilizing both employer and campus professionals to better prepare students for the workplace. Collaborate with Director and staff in all operational functions of Career Services.

Support Career Exploration Advisers on issues related to the job search strategies. Collaborate with Assistant Director, Career Systems on technology utilization and creating best practices within the University’s shared online platform, Handshake. Represent Career Services and the Division of the Student Experience on University-wide committees.
