Job Description:

Brown’s Office of Financial Strategy and Planning (OFSP) within the Finance Division supports the University’s teaching and research mission by providing strategic support across the highest levels of the University including the University Leadership, Central Administration Leadership, and School and Department Leadership.

OFSP includes three distinct yet complementary teams, the Central Budget Office, Financial, Planning and Analysis (FP&A), and Financial Operations. The Central Budget Office has the primary responsibility for developing, communicating and managing the University’s annual financial planning processes, including the University’s annual $1.3B operating budget, while ensuring these processes support the University’s missions and priorities.

The Assistant Director supports the Director in developing the university’s strategic and financial planning processes, including managing the annual operating budget, enhancing forecasting, and developing long-range, multi-year financial plans and capital plans, other management initiatives, and advancing the services provided to the university community. The Assistant Director manages the work of at least one Senior Financial Analyst.

Major Responsibility: Serve a key role in developing the university’s strategic and financial planning processes, including managing the annual operating budget, enhancing forecasting, and developing long-range, multi-year financial plans and capital plans, other management initiatives, and advancing the services provided to the university community, 60%

Supporting Actions:
  • Support the design, development, communication and management of a University-wide multi-year financial plan and utilize best practices to promote and ensure fiscally responsible use of the university’s resources in alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Support University-wide planning processes, including the collaborative development, design, and enhancement of the University’s financial analysis, forecasting, modeling and reporting to ensure and enhance the quality and timeliness of financial information and analyses to facilitate strategic decision-making.
  • Frame key questions and develop recommendations to help inform decision making among university leaders; synthesize findings and determine short- and long-term ramifications for all stakeholders.
  • Leverage the University’s budget system, Adaptive Insights, and ensure the system is utilized to its highest and best use to support the University’s financial planning processes.
  • Train and support financial staff across the University on the business use of systems (including Adaptive and Workday), budget operations, procedures and best practices to ensure the effective use of those processes and systems across a diverse user community.
  • Manage high-performing staff, with a strong commitment to performance management and career development.
  • Responsible for management decisions, hiring, promoting and other staff changes.
  • Recruit new staff as needed to strengthen and grow the team.

Supporting Actions:
  • Model and encourage a culture of openness and transparency in decision-making and information dissemination around important budgetary matters facing the university.
  • Connect, engage, and solicit feedback regularly from a wide variety of stakeholders to share information and improve processes.
  • Translate complex budgetary and financial information into clear presentations for a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Review budget submissions (university-wide) for accuracy and consistency, including preliminary validations and analysis and objective recommendations on departmental requests, including those of the FP&A team.
  • Provide financial and budgetary support to assigned University’s units (divisions or departments), including conducting objective analyses of the unit’s financial performance, developing an in-depth understanding of their financial structure, and reviewing the unit’s quarterly results, operating budgets, and multi-year financial plans.
  • Participate in the development of a university-wide financial leadership affinity group, designed to create regular opportunities for this group to convene, share information, discuss challenges and opportunities, and influence policy/decision-making.
  • Work closely with other groups within the Finance Division (including the offices of the Controller, Treasury, Workday) to better understand university-wide financial management issues that inform planning, reporting, and analysis.
Major Responsibility: Manage special projects on a wide range of financial and strategic initiatives related to specific units and topics and the university as a whole, 10%

Supporting Actions:
  • Provide financial reporting, analysis, and presentation material development partnership for university committees and initiatives, as needed. These include but are not limited to the University Resources Committee (URC) and the Budget and Finance Committees of the Brown Corporation.
  • Develop data-driven solutions to solve financial, operational, or strategic issues facing campus units.
  • Develop complex studies and analyses.
  • Document central and local business processes to identify potential process improvements.
  • Evaluate critical cost pools, analyze key performance metrics, and seek to identify the highest and best use of resources across different functional areas.

Job Qualifications and Competencies

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 8 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • MBA, CPA, or advanced degree in a related field preferred

  • Collaborative working style and ability to build strong relationships with people at all levels of the organization
  • Strong computing skills; advanced excel, PowerPoint and accounting software
  • Experience working with financial reporting such as profit and loss statements or balance sheets
  • Initiative and ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
