    PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Extension Associate in Fruit & Vegetable Horticulture will develop, conduct, and deliver Extension programing in vegetable and fruit science, as well as coordinate a national specialty/alternative crop trial, including hemp, for farm production and market feasibility as part of the new Center for Innovation, and Sustainable Small Farms, Ranches, and Forestlands (CISFRF).

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Extension Associate in Fruit & Vegetable Horticulture will deliver Extension programing in vegetable science through workshops, farm to table events, extension bulletins, and a demonstration garden at the KSU farm and possibly other locations. Another priority for this position is to coordinate a national specialty/alternative crop trial, including hemp, for farm production and market feasibility as part of the new Center for Innovation, and Sustainable Small Farms, Ranches, and Forestlands (CISFRF). The Position will be located on the Kentucky State University Campus in the College of Agriculture, Communities, and Environment. The position requires a customer-focused attitude and a passion for changing lives through education.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (ex: duties that are essential to performing the job with or without an accommodation)

    1. Coordinate a national specialty/alternative crop trial, including hemp, for farm production and market feasibility as part of the new Center for Innovation, and Sustainable Small Farms, Ranches, and Forestlands (CISFRF).”

    2. Establish a demonstration garden at the KSU Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm that will include a range of vegetable trials.

    3. Assist in implementation of a student garden initiative and student farm.

    4. Coordinate a farm to table event KSU Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm to promote locally grown foods.

    5. Conduct extension programing in either vegetable or fruit crops.

    6. Potentially teach one course in Fruit and Vegetable Science and Production and/or greenhouse management as part of the undergraduate degree in Agriculture, Food, and the Environment.

    7. Develop agricultural and educational materials for outreach events.

    8. Actively participate in national organizations for the School of ACE and AFE Educators

    9. Establish methods and plans to promote programs and reach diverse and underrepresented audiences representative of the service area including Limited English Proficient individuals.

    10. Other related duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Required: M.S. in Horticulture or Agricultural Education. One to three years of relevant experience preferred

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

    • Extensive knowledge in a specified area of expertise.

    • Ability to use a personal computer and a variety of related software applications.

    • Good knowledge and appreciation of program clientele.

    • Knowledge of research and educational capabilities of USDA and the Land Grant system knowledge base in the area of expertise.

    • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

    • Research skills.

    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Work involves some exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dust, water, smoke, and/or unpleasant odors.

    • This job involves 25-50% travel. The position will have statewide responsibilities.
