The Department of Music of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) seeks applications for a full-time tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music with specializations in Music Industry and Jazz Studies.

Primary Responsibilities: Teach core courses in Music Industry and Jazz Studies — audio production, multimedia, private instruction, ensembles. Maintain the recording studio. Maintain an active and collaborative profile within the department and university. Develop and maintain a local and regional profile within the profession and develop and maintain contacts with regional teachers, school systems, and professional organizations. Keep up to date with stylistic and pedagogical developments in the field. Be actively involved in departmental recruitment activities and participate in appropriate departmental and university-wide activities, including student advising.
 

Preferred instruments are jazz piano, guitar, bass, or drum set, but other instruments, including voice, are considered. Depending on the candidate’s interest and departmental needs, additional teaching opportunities may be available.

About the Department: The UNCP Department of Music, an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music, offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre, a Bachelor of Arts in Music with Music Industry Emphasis, a Bachelor of Arts in Music, an academic concentration, and minors in Jazz Studies, Media Integration, Music, Music Industry, Musical Theatre, and Sacred Music to approximately 150 music majors, minors, and concentrations. There are twelve full-time faculty, fifteen adjunct faculty, and three full-time staff members. The Department’s mission is to offer all students who have demonstrated interest and ability in music the opportunity to continue further study either for a profession or an avocation. We strive to educate students to understand and appreciate music not only as an art form with a rich historical and cultural heritage but as an ongoing, contemporary endeavor that incorporates tradition and technological advancements through individual and group participation. Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:  Masters degree in Music. Evidence of successful college or professional teaching experience. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational skills. Experience operating and maintaining a recording studio.

Management Preferences:  Earned doctorate in Music or equivalent professional experience. Demonstrated abilities as a performer, producer, private teacher, scholar, or adjudicator/clinician. The proven ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from various backgrounds and cultures is highly valued.
