Job Description

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University—one of the nation’s premier professional media and strategic communications programs—is seeking a dynamic recruiter/adviser to grow and nurture graduate students in our Los Angeles-based master’s programs.

As a recruiter, the team member assumes responsibility for successful graduate recruitment that both meets (or exceeds) university recruitment and enrollment goals while diversifying and strengthening the Cronkite student community in Los Angeles. The recruiter/adviser should be as comfortable on stage as they are in spreadsheets: The ideal candidate will vibrantly emcee recruitment events and engage prospective students, and effectively analyze data across sources to strategize and track goal progress.

 

As an adviser, the team member will also serve as the Cronkite School’s graduate academic adviser for its Los Angeles graduate programs, helping students to navigate appropriate course selection, connect to university resources, and forge an academic path that prepares them for fulfilling careers. The ideal candidate is committed to serving a diverse student body, is collaborative and a creative problem solver. The adviser will be a key contributor to ensuring student retention and graduation by supporting students in making timely progress toward a degree through a range of counseling and support strategies.

As a team member, the recruiter/adviser will collaborate closely with advising, communications, marketing, admissions and academic colleagues to drive success.

The role is fast-paced and results-driven, and requires high energy, approachability, strategic thinking, comfort with admissions funnel data, ability to thoughtfully advise students, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Essential Duties

  • Implement and lead the Cronkite School’s graduate student recruitment strategies in Los Angeles.
  • Provide academic advising to all Los Angeles-based graduate students in Cronkite School master’s programs.
  • Generate and qualify student leads through various face-to-face, phone, and digital tactics.
  • Lead in-person and virtual visits and recruitment events, giving frequent presentations in front of large audiences.
  • Facilitate and lead recruitment programming that emphasizes access and inclusion, including nurturing relationships with various student populations (e.g. first-generation grad students, geographic markets).
  • Maintain communication with admitted students to nurture intent and drive yield.
  • Monitor, analyze and report to school leadership on enrollment trends, goal progress across the admissions funnel, student analysis and goal tracking.
  • Identify and resolve problems and issues impacting students and enrollment processes; recommend and take corrective actions as necessary.
  • Analyze data from multiple sources to make strategic and efficient decisions about school outreach and recruitment.
  • Collaborate with centralized admissions and communications departments and Cronkite marketing specialists to coordinate effective recruitment communications content/campaigns that drive and convert high-quality applicants.
  • Harness SalesForce to organize outreach, track productivity and manage prospective student relationships.
  • Manage academic guidance to ensure students complete program curriculum, including leading face-to-face individual advising meetings, leading group meetings and info sessions, sharing relevant program materials and deadlines, updating incoming and current students via email, and more.
  • Assist students exploring academic options, registering for courses, and making timely progress towards completion of degree, and communicate with students to resolve or assist with the resolution of program-related issues.
  • Proactively monitor student academic performance, addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues and collaborates closely with students. Identifies all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills.
  • Review and approve graduate student plans of study (iPOS) to ensure compliance with established degree requirements including, but not limited to: coursework, committee and culminating experience; verifies information and updates student academic record to reflect achievement to facilitate the completion of iPOS by student.
  • Collaborate and engage with Phoenix-based Cronkite School advising team.
  • Attend and represent the school at key California, Arizona and national recruitment events, including conferences and graduate fairs.
  • Collaborate with Phoenix-based Cronkite Career Services department to elevate professional opportunities to LA students.
  • Use multiple systems at the same time (such as student record databases, customer relationship management systems, degree progress tools, appointment systems).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and three (3) years related experience, one (1) of which includes professional sales and/or direct marketing-related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Travel commitments may include domestics and international requirements involving extended and/or protracted periods of time.

  • Demonstrated record of enrollment growth at a college or university
  • Experience with student recruitment and admission practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national graduate admissions landscape and trends
  • Experience creating and/or leading recruitment events
  • Experience analyzing and reporting recruitment/admissions data
  • Experience working within a CRM (SalesForce)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of budget management methods and techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices
  • Evidence of effective communication
  • Experience working in an environment subject to tight deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies.

 

Working Environment

Our office is located at the ASU California Center, 1111 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90015.

  • Frequent evenings and occasional weekends, in addition to frequent travel locally and occasional travel out of state
  • Possess a valid driver's license for this position
  • Have ability to travel by vehicle and airplane for recruitment purposes
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Communicate to perform essential functions
