Summary:

The Senior Specialist oversees the office of Disability & Accessibility Services and is charged with authorizing services and interventions for students with documented disabilities to facilitate equal access to programs and services at Berea College.

 

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Education required to ensure success in this position:

•Bachelor's degree required with Master’s degree encouraged in a relevant field

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

•At least 3-5 years’ experience working directly with students with disabilities in Higher Education environment

Special skills, knowledge and abilities:

•Personal qualities needed to work effectively and sensitively in a diverse environment and with students with disabilities.  Experience with racially and culturally diverse populations and first-generation college students strongly preferred

•Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and best practice in the provision of accommodations and services to students with disabilities in an educational environment (preferably in higher education), while not compromising the integrity of the educational standards of the college

•Ability to work with medical, counseling, and other appropriate professionals and to identify appropriate documentation of disabilities

•Familiarity with provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504, and other relevant statutes regarding educational access for persons with disabilities and ability to understand the results of diagnostic tests and other evaluation tools

•Strong organizational and oral and written communication skills

•Commitment to collegial governance, teamwork, and creative leadership

License, certification, or registration necessary:

•Required background checks

Physical requirements:

•Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds

•Ability to travel independently by car and/or plane

Environmental conditions:

•Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors, students, staff and faculty
•Occasional travel required for meetings, conferences, etc.

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

•Standard office equipment: computer, fax, phone, etc.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Regular and predictable attendance is essential. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1. Oversee the coordination and provision of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities

a. Serve as first point of contact for student self-disclosure of disability and provide authorization for recommended reasonable accommodations based on approved supporting documentation;

b. Collaborates with appropriate others to coordinate classroom, workplace, residential, and facility accommodations and assistive technology support for students with qualifying disabilities;

c. Assist students in identifying and obtaining necessary documentation of a disability, including pre-screening and assisting students who may have qualifying learning disabilities to identify resources for diagnostic evaluation;

d. Serve as case manager for students with disabilities and assist them in academic concerns related to disabilities and to access college resources related to success and engagement;

e. Act as liaison, advocate, and resource person for students with disabilities.

f. Engage with prospective and incoming students with disabilities and their families/advocates to orient them to services provided by DAS;

2. Institutional trainingand support

a. Serve in an advisory/consulting role within the College to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and to enhance accessibility of all programs and services;

b. Partner with other departments across campus to serve as a resource related to disability and accessibility;

c. Work with campus partners, as appropriate, to assess and address training and other needs related to disabilities services, pedagogy, and accommodation provision;

d. Analyze, draft, and make recommendations to modify institutional policies, procedures, and practices related to appropriately serving students with disabilities;

e. Serve as co-chair on the Accessibility Committee as well as on other College committees, as deemed suitable, as a liaison for disability concerns.

3. Manage the Disabilities Services office

a. Review, develop, maintain, and implement disabilities services policies, procedures, and practices that incorporate the current requirements, best practices, and principles for services for student with disabilities;

b. Maintain student records, documentation, and data in accordance with FERPA, HIPPA, ADA, and other federal, state, and institutional requirements and conduct program assessment including monitoring student persistence and graduation rates;

c. Develop and monitor the disabilities services budget and write regular reports to ARF to comply with the grant requirements

d.Keep statistical data to share with AC or other campus partners as needed

e. Collaborate with DAS Specialist about regular administrative tasks for the DAS office operations

f. Supervise or delegate supervision of labor students to ensure that students have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions and develop their own knowledge, skills, and abilities to assist with and further the DAS mission;g.AssistVP of DEIwith the hiring and training of DAS staff;h.Keep professionally current by participating in professional development activities.

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
