Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track. The Philosophy Department of Elon University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in philosophy, beginning mid-August 2023. Elon University is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse faculty, staff, and student body and welcomes all applicants. We seek a candidate, Ph.D. in hand or with a defense date firmly set, whose teaching is integral to their philosophical life and who would expand, complement and enrich the Philosophy Department’s areas of expertise and long-standing focus on innovative, engaged, praxis-oriented and relationship rich pedagogies. We view and structure our department around a vision of teaching as a shared, collective, on-going enterprise. For more on our teaching practices, see our description of departmental signature pedagogies. AOS: Political Philosophy. AOC: Open. Candidates should be eager to teach in our Philosophy, Politics, and Economics minor. We seek a candidate who:

  • thinks of teaching and learning as inherently political activities and organizes the experience of the classroom as such; uses engaged/civic pedagogies (inside and/or outside the classroom) to meet learning goals; and whose research agenda and pedagogical practices are informed by critical intellectual and practical resources, including but not limited to those developed in the context of non-western philosophies, activism, social movements (including those centering indigenous and diasporic rights, embodied cognition, bodily autonomy, abolitionism, and others), and radical philosophy.

Teaching responsibilities include 6 classes per year, typically including 4 introductory level classes and 2 upper level classes, as well as courses in Elon’s Core Curriculum and at least one course in the PPE minor. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of people, and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences in their cover letter. Elon is a dynamic private, co- educational, comprehensive institution that is a national model for actively engaging faculty and students in teaching and learning in a liberal art based residential campus. To learn more about Elon, please visit the University web site at www.elon.edu . To apply, submit: 1. a cover letter (which should explicitly address how you will help foster diversity and inclusive learning within the department), 2. a C.V., 3. graduate transcripts, 4. a substantial statement of teaching philosophy and aspirations, 5. a research statement that includes an articulation of potential or realized ways that your research and your pedagogies shape each other; 6. a summary of teaching/course evaluations, 7. two recent syllabi, 8. three letters of recommendation, and 9. a writing sample to politicalphilosophy@elon.edu. Applications are due by November 1, 2022. If you have questions, please email Stephen Bloch-Schulman, the chair of the search committee (sschulman@elon.edu). We affirm that Elon University values and celebrates the diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and perspectives of our community members. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer, and our employees are people who foster respect for human differences, passion for lifelong learning, personal integrity, and an ethic of work and service. Diversity not only includes race and gender identity, but also age, disability status, veteran status, sexual orientation, religion, and many other parts of one’s identity. All our employees’ points of view are key to our success, and inclusion is everyone's responsibility.
