The Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic-year position as an Assistant Professor of Dance. This candidate will be broadly trained with expertise in Somatically-informed Modern Dance Technique (intermediate/advanced level), Choreography/Composition, Balance Body Mind and Pilates. Specific teaching assignments will depend on the candidate's expertise and departmental needs, which may include Afro-Caribbean, and/or continental African dance forms, Asian, Indigenous, and/or Latin American dance studies, or other dance centric studies. additional responsibilities may include: teaching online courses and advising students about their academic progress and careers in dance.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate students, be active in scholarly and applied research, and engage in service activities. Our faculty are expected to be innovative, adaptive, engaging teachers across modalities; producers of impactful creative and/or scholarly work; leaders in meaningful service activities to multiple communities creating a place where everyone's wellbeing is supported through respectful, authentic, and engaged relationships with each other.

Dance studies within the Department of Theatre and Dance meet current standards in dance education and are a solid foundation for the expected needs of the increasing numbers of dance students within the Central San Joaquin Valley service area. Our dance program currently includes a BA in Dance, a Minor in Dance and General Education courses. Soon the new California Single-Subject Teaching Credential in Dance will be added. The curriculum establishes a foundation rich in the core areas of dance and is designed to educate students to become skillful, articulate, expressive movers; find their own voice as creative artists; develop the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment; and grow in their conceptual understanding of dance as an art form in relation to the other arts and the diverse global society in which they live.

The Department of Theatre and Dance currently has eight full-time faculty, several part-time faculty, and over 250 students enrolled in various dance courses. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Qualifications:

Required Education:

  • An MFA in Dance, Choreography or closely related terminal degree from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent is required. Applicants nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered. For an appointment, the degree must be completed by the date of appointment (August 1, 2023).


  • Required Experience:

  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching at the undergraduate college level or in an equivalent professional setting.
  • Demonstrated excellence in a somatically-informed pedagogy, a commitment to creative research in performance and/or publication, and willingness to make contributions to strengthening our current dance curriculum, participating in recruitment, retention, and graduation strategies; and mentoring students in deep and meaningful ways.


  • Preferred Experience :

  • An active career engaged as a dance practitioner/or scholar as evidenced by CV. This includes dance training, performing, choreographing, restaging, and/or collaborating and as a dance educator. Specially within the realm of somatically-informed Modern Dance Technique (intermediate/advanced level), Choreography/Composition, Balance Body Mind and Pilates. As well as Afro-Caribbean, and/or continental African dance forms, Asian, Indigenous, and/or Latin American dance studies, or other dance centric studies.
  • Somatic certification or advanced knowledge of one or more somatic practices.
  • A record of innovative approaches to dance education as evidenced by syllabus, teaching philosophy or teaching demonstration sample.
  • Expertise in assessing student learning capabilities and learning styles and understanding how to develop curriculum of assigned courses.
